The culture object I chose was the film “Pleasantville”. The movie is about two high schoolers, David and Jennifer, in the 90’s who are transformed into the television show “Pleasantville”. As alluded in the title, the show they mysteriously appear in is perfect; nothing ever goes wrong. David’s first instinct is to follow the plotline of the show, he doesn’t think they should disrupt the citizen’s lives. Jennifer has different plans, and has sex with one of the boys at the high school. This concept is completely unknown to the people of Pleasantville, and stirs the town into turmoil. Everyone then starts acting out line; they have feelings and emotions that control their actions. They no longer all have the same mindset. I thought this movie was a good example of a community going from mechanical to organic solidarity. In the beginning, the people in the community were mirror images …show more content…
As society modernizes, and the division of labor increases, individuals have a weakened sense of community and therefor a weakened restriction of behavior. In the movie, Jennifer started to express her own views and beliefs. She sought to satisfy her own wants. People in the community started to follow her footsteps. They felt a lack of restraint to satisfy their own wants. As more and more people decided to stray away from the norm, eventually everyone did because there was no longer a sense of community holding together the normal belief system. Durkheim also talks about the forced division of labor. This is where a division of labor is not allowed to just happen naturally in society. Examples of this are things such as slavery or a dictatorship. The mayor in the movie “Pleasantville” tries to force the individuals into solidarity after the citizens of the town become colorful. He puts a ban on color people at public venues. He tries to force the town back to the way it was, but he does not
Starting at a young age, the main characters lives are intertwined. They form a special bond, which have both positive and negative affects on their relationship. At the time when Jim and Antonia are growing up, a rigid social structure exists in Nebraska. This social difference contributed to the creation and alteration of their friendship; in part, it is responsible for their behavior toward one another.
The concept of change is conveyed through the film Pleasantville in various ways such as colour from black and white to a colourful Pleasantville. This film portrayed the changes that occurred in American society over the past 50 years. The movie describes various changes that occurred such as in sexual relations, violence, and family matters and roles. Pleasantville film represents the viewer with how the racial and sexual equality began and that the world we live in is not perfect. It also depicts the on-going changes in everyday lifestyles of the American citizens. Another change was the civil rights movements, reversed racism. Also, women’s liberation was submissive but not sexual. Moreover, sexual revolution the advent of the pill. Pleasantville
With the arrival of the TV repair man we get more sense of the sci-fi
The contemplative film Pleasantville written and directed by Gary Ross may suggest that society pursues perfection but perfection is antithetical to human nature.
Adams review offers that the characters, David and Jennifer come from a broken family. He then suggests that the two of them need guidance for Jennifer escapes from reality through boys while David escapes from reality through television. By being transported to the sitcom Pleasantville, the time they spent is what guides them.
At the beginning of their journey, they shocked from the dream that comes true. They have to have adapted with the reality as they become a part of Pleasantville and it is difficult to go back their home. David converted to Bud Parker and Jennifer to Mary Sue the son and daughter on the show. David’s behaviors have changed once he arrived Pleasantville, Jennifer seems afraid of Pleasantville, but her brother encourages her frequently to be effective in the community. Bud (David) that person who does not recognize the life prior Pleasantville begins to act positively by working at restaurant with an artist who makes difference later to the city. Furthermore, he keeps supporting Mary (Jennifer) to live the life and meet a famous guy in Pleasantville
Another interesting thing I noticed in the movie was the way the characters acted towards each other. They both had disorders but said what was on their mind to each other no matter how bad it sounded. I think the bond between them that was displayed in the movie was very interesting in regards to how some people may act towards each other that have been
Durkheim was concerned with studying and observing the ways in which society functioned. His work began with the idea of the collective conscious, which are the general emotions and opinions that are shared by a society and which shape likeminded ideas as to how the society will operate (Desfor Edles and Appelrouth 2010:100-01). Durkheim thus suggested that the collective ideas shared by a community are what keeps injustices from continuing or what allows them to remain.
...are today are more a result of our society rather than genetic change. Also it reminds us not to water our plants with our favorite sports drink! All in all, this film does make you think more about science and the future our world more than most and I enjoyed it.
I have always believed that all races have their good and bad. Their is never going to be the perfect race. This movie definitely set a powerful message that life is not perfect for any race and that even though people are from different cultures, they are all interconnected somehow. The filmmakers did a great job at showing us that individuals should not be based on first impressions such as skin color or the social status.
The division of labour is the call to specialization that will come about when technology advances and populations become denser like those of cities as argued by Durkheim (Carls, n.d.). He used the example of transition of societies from mechanical to organic solidarities as a vehicle to show that division of labour has a definite impact on social integration and morality. Whereas it can be enticing to follow suit and agree with the thinking of a great visionary, there are problems with applying that to today’s context. There are underlying assumptions that do not hold true, and as such it cannot be said that division of labour always has an impact on social integration and morality. Social integration can be seen as social solidarity in Durkheim’s
Emile Durkheim in reference to the division of labour in Society, attempts to determine what the basis of social solidarity in the society is and how it has evolved over time. Social solidarity is having influences of mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. In case of mechanical solidarity which mainly deals with ancient societies
...I like everything to be peaceful. Based on our Psychology book this movie falls into the Trait Perspective, were the aspect of personality that is inferred from behavior and assumed to give rise to constant behavior.
Not only does this movie deal with the issues of society, but it points to biblical scriptures that help lead us in the right direction. The biggest lesson that this film taught me was that if I put my complete faith in God, then no matter what happens, he will provide, watch over, and take care of me. I learned that expressing belief in God is not enough. I have to live everyday believing and trusting him and I have to show my trust and faith through my actions and my words.
...ch each person is independent with others, forming a complex web of cooperative associations” (Appelrouth A. S.; Edles D. L 2012). In simpler terms, organic solidarity can also be seen as sort of like a basketball team. Each individual on the team differs from one another talent wise, but they all come and form together to play a part and get that win for the good of the whole team. Now, the type of city where organic solidarity would be most prevalent is the modern industrial societies. Durkheim believed that organic solidarity, based on the specialization of tasks, is a characteristic of a large industrial society like New York, or Chicago. The reason being is because within a larger city the division of labor is more spontaneous and free, where in a smaller city people are more likely to engage in all the same work or share some of the same beliefs and ideas.
