As a young child I wanted to be a police officer. Throughout high school I learned about different professions and how each profession can impact our communities in different ways. In Mrs. Amy Slack’s Career Exploration class, which I took my junior year helped me determined what profession I wanted to purse and that would be criminology. It was based on my childhood dream. I choose criminology because I enjoy learning and studying crime and criminals. I live in a community where crime it taking a toll on the community. I want to investigate, learn about different issues and put the pieces of Puzzle together. According to Wikipedia a detective is “an investigator, usually a member of a law enforcement agency. They often collect information to solve crimes by talking to witnesses and informants, collecting physical evidence, or searching records in data bases,” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detective) I want criminals to know they have done is wrong and law enforcement always find out at the end of the day.
Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals. As a young person, I’ve always enjoyed watching the television show Cops created by John Langley and Malcolm Barbour because they would stop crime and risk their lives in ghetto communities and talk to the criminals and help them understand what they’ve done was wrong and put them under containment. The program show scenes where officers would have to take a more violent stance with the offenders because they were not following directions and that’s what life is about, following directions and doing things the right way. In the program the cops are trying to present to the people committing the crime, follow directions, follow the law and everything will be okay. For example, I feel that I am more aware of my peers doing crimes than doing well. My goal when I pursue my education are to educate the next generation about crime and to prevent them from following that life style. I would like to teach the youth that all law enforcement officers are not corrupt or bad. Court judges are not taking their mother or father away for no reason. This is a concern on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. I learned children who are raised in homes that have criminals activities then to think it is okay to commit crimes and become involved in criminal activities.
