Released in December 4, 2000, Eminem wrote the song called Stan sending a message to other singers to appreciate their fans since most of them see artists as their role models. When I first heard this song it made me reflect about how someone can change someone else’s life significantly. The rapper Eminem, also known as Slim Shady writes this song from a fans point of view named Stan that constantly writes to his number one artist, Eminem in search for comfort, support and friendship.

When Stan begins to write his letters to Slim he feels worthless with no purpose to life; but as soon as he sees his idols posters he feels good and figures that life could be worse. The song’s chorus reads, “but your picture on my wall It reminds me, that it's not so bad,it's not so bad…”(7) Stan always signs his name and reminds Slim how loyal of a fan he is,“truly yours, your biggest fan, this is Stan.” (25)As he waits for Slims response, Stan tries to justify why he probably hasn’t replied. “There probably was a problem at the post office or something, sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em.” (12)Stan writes about his girlfriend being pregnant as well as Slims girlfriend and even tells him what he might named his baby. I feel like Stan sees Slim not just an artist but like a close friend to whom he can talk about his personal life.

In the second letter he writes he begins to feel frustrated, I can tell because his use of vocabulary; “I ain't mad - I just think it's F***** UP you don't answer fans.”(28) He still continues to tell Slim about his family and how Slim ignored his little brother Mathew out a concert, “He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do.”(35) Stan looks up to Slim because he can rel...

...s his girlfriend with his baby and himself, Slim finally replies back. He apologizes and shows interest on Stans life and answers all his questions. He writes back, “Try to understand that I do want you as fan”(100) Slim doesn’t finish his letter because he realizes that it was too late for him to help one of his fans, Stan. He writes about what he had seen on the news a drunk guy that drove his car over a bridge and had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid and in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to. He finally realizes the guy on the news was named Stan just how his fan was named.

This song was intended to go towards all the crazy fans that do crazy things and become too obsessed with people.

“All I wanted was a lousy letter or a call” –Stan (67)
