Comparison of RLS and Narcolepsy
Introduction:
RLS and Narcolepsy are both sleep disorders that have an impact on our sleep, whether it be in length or sleep quality.
Narcolepsy is a disorder that results in a large amount of daytime sleepiness (the body wanting to sleep during normally active times), with users often feeling drowsy, (less commonly) undergoing sleep paralysis, seeing hallucinations just after sleep, or even cataplexy, which is where the body experiences a loss of muscle function that is mainly triggered by emotions. The amount of people that suffer narcolepsy varies from country to country; in Israel, there is around one case per 500,000 people, whilst in Japan it can be as many as one in 600. However, some doctors have recommended Narcoleptic sleepers to enter regimes that allow for their body to recover from the drowsiness, such as regular sleep cycles, no studying/video-games/exercising before bed, or even simple napping whenever they feel tired (though not always easy in today’s rushed world). Some have even taken strong stimulants and sedatives to ensure that they can have a regular lifestyle, though this may have as yet undocumented consequences.
There are some drugs that can disrupt the “regurgitation” of the chemical signals that tell the body to sleep or remain alert and awake. However, these drugs can actually prove counterproductive by disrupting the sleep cycle.
Likewise for RLS, there is no real cure. For those who contract it after the age of 45, it is possible to simply ignore the effects of it, as it seems to come and go. However, for those who contract it under the age of 45, it can appear to become worse and worse. Doctors have recommended massaging the affected area, stretching the leg, hot baths, or even simple walking.
