On writing assignment two, we had to compare and contrast two items and write an essay about them. In this paper I chose FM radio and Satellite radio; because I want to get in the radio field after graduation and I thought it would be good to know the difference. I already knew the basics of radio but I wanted to dig deep and find out how it’s ran and why people pay for satellite radio. Although this was the second writing assignment in class it was the most challenging for me because I had to take my personal feelings out of it and give the reader facts so they can choice what’s best for them. I believe when you do compare and contrast essays it’s important that you come to the table with a clear mind and blank sheet of paper.

For examples they both play music but if you don’t like edited music you want to pick satellite radio because they aren’t edited because they aren’t regulated by FCC. The way I planned to set up my paper was to give a brief description about both FM radio and satellite radio. Next I wanted to go over the benefits of FM radio and satellite radio around children. First I wanted to give my personal opinion on it since I’m knowledgeable of having both on around children. Next, I did research on the UMUC library; I looked up radio and children. I didn’t get too much information, so I went to google and found a lot of information about the FCC. I went into commercials next on this essay because I think it’s one of the main factors that separate the FM radio and satellite radio. I was able to look into how FM radio needs the commercials because that’s how they get their income. Satellite radio doesn’t need commercials because the listener pays for it. I wanted to go into the mindset of the artist, I was an intern at multiple FM radio stations and I’ve seen artist get interviewed. Has anyone ever wondered how radio communications changed society during the 1930’s? According to the research done by the Education Foundation, many people believe that the most important development in the radio at that time was entertainment; this is entirely false. In fact, radio communications not only made an impact in the way people received their news, but also brought together a nation that got out of a brutal depression. Together, the nations as one made radio communications the commanding form of media in the 1930’s. Well two companies and many big investors are betting about $3 billion dollars that people are willing to do just that. In 1997, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) granted a portion of the S-band spectrum for satellite radio and two companies purchased use of these bands and started the only two companies competing in the satellite radio business today, namely Sirius and XM. Analysts like William Kidd of CE Unterberg Towpin, predict satellite radio will generate about $10 billion a year in revenues by 2007 (McClean, 2001).

We use compare and contrast every day in our lives to make choices why did you go to the store today and not tomorrow, or why go to work over going to school? All of these questions use compare and contrast to help make a choice. Compare is talking about the similarities and contrast is talking the differences both are necessary for a complete evaluation. Whenever you see words like advantages, disadvantages, evaluate the differences, or relative merits, these all signal the use of compare and contrast in everyday lives. They are two ways to use compare and contrast. The first is subject by subject and second is point by point. Subject by subject looks at each situation as a whole bite. Michelle Obama’s “Bowie State University Commencement” speech conveyed a message that people should value education and also enrich the lives of others with knowledge. However, Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill present the essay “Should Everyone Go to College? The essay gives numerous statistics based on arguments of whether college is the right decision for everyone and which majors have negative financial repercussions. Obamas use of the rhetorical appeals were much stronger and persuasive to argue that we should value education rather than Owen and Sawhill stating that college is not the right decision for everyone. When composing this essay I created a chart dividing the two and putting down how each used the rhetorical appeals then I began to write. Radio-wave technology is one of the most important technologies used by man. It has forever changed the United States and the world, and will continue to do so in the future. Radio has been a communications medium, a recreational device, and many other things to us. When British physicist James Clerk Maxwell published his theory of electromagnetic waves in 1873, he probably never could have envisioned the sorts of things that would come of such a principle. His theory mainly had to do with light waves, but fifteen years later, a German physicist named Heinrich Hertz was able to electrically generate MaxwellÕs ÒraysÓ in his lab. The discovery of these amazing properties, the later invention of a working wireless radio, and the resulting technology have been instrumental to AmericaÕs move into the Information Age. The invention of radio is commonly credited to Guglielmo Marconi, who, starting in 1895, developed the first ÒwirelessÓ radio transmitter and receiver. Working at home with no support from his father, but plenty from his mother, Marconi improved upon the experiments and equipment of Hertz and others working on radio transmission. He created a better radio wave detector or cohere and connected it to an early type of antenna. With the help of his brothers and some of the neighborhood boys he was able to send wireless telegraph messages over short distances. By 1899 he had established a wireless communications link between England and France that had the ability to operate under any weather conditions. He had sent trans-Atlantic messages by late 1901, and later won the Nobel prize for physics in 1909. Radio works in a very complicated way, but hereÕs a more simple explanation than youÕll get from most books: Electromagnetic waves of different wavelengths are produced by the transmitter, and modulations within each wavelength are adjusted to carry ÒencodedÓ information. The receiver, tuned to read the frequency the transmitter is sending on, then takes the encoded information (carried within the wave modulations), and translates it back into the sensory input originally transmitted. Many of the men who pioneered radio had designs for it. Marconi saw it as the best communication system and envisioned instant world-wide communication through the air. David Sarnoff ( later the head of RCA and NBC) had a vision of Òa radio receiver in every homeÓ in 1916, although the real potential of radio wasnÕt realized until after World War I.

My greatest strengths in my writing are my organizational skills and my work ethic, and I have certainly improved on my synthesis, evaluation, and summary skills. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The American Marriage Essay, Synthesis Essay, and the Compare and Contrast Essay all have an introduction, a thesis statement, a body, a conclusion, and works cited pages. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct in The American Marriage Essay, Synthesis Essay, and the Compare and Contrast Essay. Grammar is also very vital to a well-organized paper. I have shown through my writing that I excel at creating grammatically correct essays. For example the thesis from my Compare and Contrast Essay, “While Andrew Sullivan’s “For Gay Marriage” and William J. Bennett’s “Against Gay Marriage” are both about gays joining in matrimony, Bennett takes an anti-gay marriage stance while Sullivan takes a
Writing is one of my favorite things to do in my life. I love it when my awesome teacher gives us a writing assignment. Also, that time I feel so happy because there are thousands of ways to write essays but whatever teacher give us a different way to write essays. In my class, we write differently than another class. First thing we do in class is discussing about other people who wrote essay before with the same topic. Our teacher read aloud in class before, we read by ourself, and annotate every paragraph and write the main idea about the paragraph. Next, we do pre-writing like brainstorming, clustering, focused free-write, summary of TedTalk, vocabulary Log, notes paraphrases and connection for two of the articles also clarify and evaluate
During this semester, I have strengthened my writing by trying new writing techniques, learning about purpose, and finding new ways of combating writers block. My first essay in this class was less focused then the essays I wrote later in this class. I was overwhelmed by the length requirement of the essay, and had limited experience with different writing techniques. This semester, however, I have attempted both listing and outlining. I had never used either techniques before, nevertheless, my writing benefited did from these new techniques; however, I believe I had more success with the listing technique. I used listing while writing my classify and divide essay and I believe it helped me to stay on topic and keep my writing organized. I used an outline to help me write my compare and contrast essay, and while it did help with organization, it was more complicated than the listing technique.
In modern society, radio is the most widely used medium of broadcasting and electronic communication. Radio can be broadcasted with both microwaves and longer radio waves. These are transmitted in two ways: amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). Amplitude radio is created by combining a sound wave from a microphone, tape, record, or CD with a "carrier" radio wave. This results in a wave that transmits voice or programming as its amplitude (intensity) increases and decreases. Frequency modulation conveys information, voice, and music on a radio wave is to slightly change, or modulate, the frequency. One big advantage of frequency modulation is that it is static free.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
