Before taking the Communication 101 course I never really felt confident in my public speaking skills. When I was younger I was a very shy kid, I never really spoke my opinion in classes and never wanted to raise my hand to answer a question. As a result, I was that kid who was deadly afraid to get called on so he would try to hide in the back of the class and just blend in. As I grew older, I started to grow out of the being afraid habit, and realized I’m just going to have to speak publicly. So I tried my best to set my nerves aside, and started to raise my hand in class or even volunteer to present first. When it comes to giving a speech, I really like to be able to know my topic and have as much time as possible to practice my speech. This allows me to feel comfortable and helps me minimize the chances of messing up, or forgetting something. So this assignment was a new concept to me, and I was worried that my speech wouldn’t be done as well as I’d like. However, there was a couple of things I can do to help prepare for the speech. Such as, looking over the example impromptu, practicing giving myself topics to make outlines on, and even having a mock impromptu with my suitemates. Once I started to do stuff like this, I realized it wasn’t going to be that bad, and my nerves started to settle. These goals are; my vocal clarity and maintain a good pace while speaking. Sometimes during my speech’s, the adrenaline kicks in and I start talking way to fast and its hard for people to understand me. That didn’t happen during my impromptu because that’s been something I’ve been wanting to work on. So even though it didn’t happen, I want to make sure it stays that way. On the other hand, sometimes my nerves get the best of me and I stumble on some words, which effects my vocal clarity. My hope is that throughout this course I’ll get more comfortable with speaking, and I wont have as many stumbles.
