College Degree…Is It Worth It?

First, students will gain more knowledge. College will expand their thinking and mind. College also broadens their minds into new life experiences, skills, and techniques. In an interview with Melissa Maley, a Religion Professor at GTCC, she stated “students can gain much going to college far beyond just a job. College teaches students discipline and organization (or it should) and how to meet deadlines under pressure. College exposes students to multiple points of view and helps people wade through multiple levels on information in order to discern the relevance and correctness of this information”. Basically, college can do more than just preparing student for their career, but also learning all the other aspect as well. “College is the center of learning” says Melissa Maley. In high school, students only learn the basic skills unless they take specific college classes. In college, students memorize and study more advanced information. Not only students will gain new skill, but they will also practice they desired field of major at a much higher level. It may take several years to complete and fully understand the new skills, but it is totally worth it. Secondly, students who get a college degree will have many opportunities open up for them. There will be more jobs waiting for them after they graduate. When they graduate they can go straight to work in the field of their interest and for which they studied. In today’s world, many jobs require a college degree rather than a high school diploma. Blanche D. Blank, author of “A Question of Degree”, implies that “with the ability to do paraprofessional mental-health works are lost to jobs they could hold with pleasure and profit because the training program also requires a two-yea... ... middle of paper ... ...pends on what major or career the students choose to study to base their income. "A graduate majoring in humanities can’t compete monetarily with someone with a professional degree," says Michael Zimmerman, author of College Works. He stated that some of the major are "useless" and does not earn much money. Income is only half of the equation on why student choose to go to college. Lastly, student should go to college because it sets a good example to their children and kids and they can start a tradition. According to American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, children look up to many role models but their parent and caregiver are the most important one. If they see that their parents are successful college graduates with higher degrees, they will most likely want to attend college as well. It is up to the parent to set a good example to their children.
