The amount of time and effort athletes devote to becoming the best in their league is remarkable. Athletic programs begin at very young ages and grow from there. Some athletes grow tired of playing sports and quit, while others have the dream of making it to the major leagues. These athletes continue to work hard and grow stronger as they strive to achieve their goal. They make it all the way to high school sports and then work hard enough to hopefully receive an athletic scholarship to the school of their dreams. Money should not be a college athlete’s largest concern. There is more to college athletics than receiving money for participating in a sports program. I agree with the statement made by Horace Mitchell and Marc Edelman that says, “A fundamental NCAA commitment under the collegiate model is to student-athlete well-being, where institutions have the responsibility to establish and maintain an environment in which student-athletes' activities are conducted to encourage academic success and individual development as an integral part of the educational experience.” College is a time to continue the educational process and not to focus on just sports. A student does not attend college to earn a salary like the employees that are employed at the university. In the article “Should College Athletes Be Paid To Play?" Donald Remy states “The NCAA, in accordance with courts that have addressed the issue, believes that student-athletes are not employees, under the law, and that they should not be treated as employees either by the law or by the schools they attend” (Cooper). College level athletes do not play sports for a profession they play because they want to continue participating in a sport they enjoy while attending college. The decision to play sports at the collegiate level is a choice all athletes have to make. College athletes are not hired to play like the professional athletes in leagues such as the MLB, NBA, NFL, and others. They are college athletes that make a choice to participate and are aware of the many hours of hard work it takes to participate in college sports.
