Although I've never actually understood why, I've always felt drawn toward the aid of others. In some ways, I feel it stems from a compassion gained from my own experiences. I know what it feels like to be in need and how powerful it is to be lifted up by another person. I’ve seen that kind of humility in other people, as they’ve inspired me, enlightened me, and empowered me at times I needed it most; I’ve always hoped to be that light for another person, even in the smallest ways. In turn, I also know what it’s like to be burdened by solitude in times of hardship. I guess I’ve been drawn to helping others in fear of seeing their pain, knowing that I, in one way or another, have felt it too. Helping others in need of anything really (friendship, advice, support, kindness, education, empathy etc.), is one of the rarest beauties in this world. I feel that teaching is the most influential way I can help others each and every day. I first found my passion for helping others when I was given the opportunity to build a school in the village of La Chimpanilla, Nicaragua. It was the most remarkable experience I have ever had. It is essential to understand that each student has come from a different upbringing; their life’s experiences, privileges, and opportunities have not been the same. Many of them may be fighting battles we don’t know about, they may struggle with inequalities we can’t even fathom—but, learning shouldn’t have to be an additional stressor. Knowledge is a powerful thing; no person should be limited in their ability to learn, regardless of what country, or county they grow up in.
