College Admissions Essay: A Career As An Engineer

Many different areas of my life have drawn me toward the field of engineering. Different people and events have helped me discover qualities that I possess that an engineer also have. High school classes have taught me that I both enjoy and excel in math and science. My first job highlighted my natural disposition to ask questions, and work with my hands. Volunteering with my youth group helped me to exercise executing the most efficient plan for a task. I may not be completely sure what career path within engineering best suits me, but I know that I possess the qualities and abilities to succeed in this field. I know that I do not have limited options when it comes to the field of engineering. Many of my life experiences have led me to consider this field, even though I may not have had any direct contact to activities directly related to engineering. I know from high school that I both excel in and enjoy courses in math and science. From working for a landscaping service, I learned that I am both inquisitive, and possess the ability to do hands on work. Volunteering with my youth group showed my desire for efficiency in any task. My goal for this career fair is to find out how others have found jobs in engineering that may overlap with other interests they have. For example, I have great interests in music and astronomy. I spend a lot of time playing guitar and singing, and watching videos about the moon, constellations, and space in general. I understand that it may be difficult to find a career in engineering that correspond with these interests, but these are just two examples of other hobbies I have. I am interested in finding out if anyone else has found a job that overlaps with their “unrelated interests.” To me, this seems like a great way to find a job that best fits a person. I am also interested in talking to people who may have changed their major. Perhaps there are certain cues that I have missed that should hint me to changing to a different discipline. Understanding the processes of others may help me truly identify if mechanical engineering is the right discipline for me. I am eager to continue to learn more in the upcoming years at Geneva College, and find where I am called in the field of
