Clinical nutrition and nutritional care have gained wide clinical and scientific interest during the past decades. The increasing knowledge of metabolic disturbances and nutritional assessment in chronic and acute diseases has stimulated rapid advances in design, development and clinical application of nutritional support. Clinical nutrition is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the intake, absorption, and metabolism of dietary constituents and with the promotion of health through the prevention of diet related diseases. Adult diseases of clinical nutrition encompass the most common causes of mortality in the developed world and include obesity with its co-morbidities of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemias, increased risks of cardiovascular disease, some cancers, and pulmonary failure; intestinal disorders related to inadequate nutrient absorption; eating disorders; and malnutrition associated with chronic illness and surgical trauma. Yet, despite the prevalence of nutritional disorders in clinical medicine and increasing scientific evidence on the significance of dietary modification to disease prevention, present day practitioners of medicine are typically untrained in the relationship of diet to health and disease. Before I took this course, I had a strong understanding of what is clinical nutrition. I watched many videos about how to become a certified clinical nutritionist, I read a lot of books about how a clinical nutritionist can help patients with IBS, IBD, leaky gut plans a healthy diet. After reading the modules from week one through week three, I learned lots of things about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, how to apply the behavior change theory. After a detailed studying of American Dietary Guidelines, Behavior change theory, Digestive disease I can definitely relate to clinical nutrition and see myself as certified clinical nutritionist. If someone with digestive disorder like Leaky gut, IBS and IBD, I can definitely give them an advice on integrative approaches like the use of fennel, peppermint, hypnotherapy for IBS. I would definitely like to increase my knowledge about helping patients with IBS or any digestive issues, by taking more clinical nutrition classes or doing continuing education web Mainers. I feel like clinical nutrition is the natural healer for all the chronic disease we have today. It will definitely help create a healthy generation. We definitely need to incorporate clinical nutrition into our medical school curriculum
