The map I chose projects every state in the United States and also shows which fast food restaurant is most prevalent and favored in the individual state. A Choropleth map is one that uses color to show data, my map uses Chloropleth techniques and also portrays the brand symbol of the restaurant that is specific to the state. This is a smart choice of the cartographer because the viewer doesn’t have to know that much about map reading to understand what is being portrayed. This map is easy to look at and understand because as a country/society we all identify fast food restaurants by their symbols, so the cartographer made a smart decision by using symbols (to describe data) that are easily understood by the viewer of the map. By looking For instance, towards Western United States, In-N-Out Burgers is the most popular in the certain region. The use of the word region also brings up another point. There are different regions of the United States. People define “region” differently based on their circumstances and location. Although regions are vague, they are important. We could name a larger portion of the United States as Chick-fil-A fans than as Wendy’s fans. That could be considered a region! The scale of this map is not shown which could be considered a limitation. If someone doesn’t know anything about map projecting then they might be confused. Because this in not a whole world map projection there are no serious distortions. Although the disadvantages of this map outweigh the advantages, this is still a map that shows enough information to be thought provoking and informative for the viewer. Some disadvantages include that if the viewer is not aware of the complete intent of this map they could assume, for instance, if Chick-Fil-A isn’t the brand shown on a state that their are no Chick-Fil-A’s in that state. The viewer would need to look at a map of specifically locations
