Child abuse is a serious crisis around the world. The damaging effects that maltreatment has on the child can last into adulthood and further. Child abuse can damage the victims growing process and lead to serious behavioral and physical problems. There are some types of child abuse that will show symptoms, and some types that will not. Educators, school’s nurses, and school’s counselors are typically the main adults that catch these symptoms. They are required by law to report any suspicions. Many children die each day from maltreatment alone. Reporting child abuse could save any child’s life for a day longer. There are many types of child abuse. These categories include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglected. The investigations show that 20 percent of children are physically abused, 10 percent are sexually abused, and approximately 75 percent are neglected (Kauchak and Eggen, 52). The most common abuse among family and friends is sexual abuse (Kauchak and Eggen, 52). One out of five girls are sexually abused whereas one out of twenty boys are sexually abused (Kauchak and Eggen, 52). The most commonly reported type of abuse overall in the United States are cases of abandonment and carelessness (Paulk, 65). In 1997, statistics proved that roughly five children die a day from child maltreatment (Paulk, 66). Current statistics show the rate has increased immensely from five to nearly 28 deaths a day from child abuse (Paulk, 66). Child abuse is a serious crisis and teachers are often the first line of protection. Unfortunately, symptoms may never show because the child works hard to hide the signs and to protect their caretakers. It is crucial that all adults observe children, watching for any signs of abnormal behavior. Once an adult has suspicions of child abuse, they should report it immediately.
