Charter schools are unique. They are open to any student who wishes to attend. Unlike traditional public schools, they are held accountable for achieving educational results or their school will be shut down. So they don’t have bureaucratic rules and many of the restrictions that other public schools have to deal with. It is a public school that is independently run and is granted flexibility in its operations. Charter schools are governed by each local community. The local community usually includes teachers and parents. As public schools, they are the only schools that allow parents or community groups to reinvent the public school system. Charter schools improve education by offering students more creative approaches to learning and by giving parents more choices. In states with charter laws, students don’t have to go to their assigned school in their local school district and can enroll in any charter school. That means a student is not stuck in their zone school. They allow students from any other area the ability to enroll, but not everyone gets in because there is only a limited amount of seats. Since charter schools are granted more flexibility, they can develop more innovative programs. Effective school leadership, which includes instructional leadership, team goal-setting and distributed leadership, is one of the most important factors influencing teacher behavior and student outcomes (Wei, Patel, and Young 5). They are better in areas such as quality of teaching, academic standards, extra help for students, individual attention from teachers, discipline and accessibility. Parents have the option of choosing whichever school they want and don’t have to be restricted to a school. I have friends that don’t want to bring their children to their local school but have no other choice than to bring them. Also, many of them have special interest classes. This allows students a choice to choose classes such as the performing arts that will help offer new insights with their career choice. Charter schools are something that parents definitely should consider when choosing schools if they are not happy with where their children is at. They are excellent schools that provide unique learning environment that would benefit their child. In the documentary “The Lottery”, Geoffrey Canada said “You get charter for 5 years. One of the great things about charter school is that it is totally accountable. If you don’t own a decent school, you will not get your charter renewed and essentially your school will be closed.” From listening to what he said in the documentary we know that ineffective schools will be closed and good charter schools with improved achievement will stay open and continue to
