That means in an ecosystem with different obstacles different traits will prosper in that ecosystem than another. The Time Traveller comes to the same conclusion. He says that because the Eloi didn't have to work or think much they became weak and simple minded. He also says that because the Murlock have to work underground and had to solve problems and make things they became stronger and smarter than the Eloi. Darwin finally said in nature organisms are limited in their ability to survive based on how their surrounding climate changes. That means they need to adapt to climate changes in order to survive. The Time Traveller theorized that the Murlock and Eloi had all gone through different climate changes. That's why they have different traits and abilities. The Eloi had to deal with a warm sunny surface climate so they just wear clothes while the Murlock dealt with a colder underground climate and got fur and pale skin.
