The true personalities of characters can be revealed when they are placed in dire situations. You learn about their strengths, weaknesses, and the conditions that overwhelm them. The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, surrounds itself around the events of the 1692 Salem, Massachusetts Witch Trials. Readers of the play will come across characters such as John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Abigail Williams. It is characters such as these that exhibit the types of personas that existed during those times, and how they affected themselves, or changed for the better or worse. John has to accept the fact that he had an affair and committed adultery with Abigail Williams. “Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby. Aye, but we did.” (Miller, 22) John’s refusal to accept the affair leads Abigail on a mission to get rid of his wife with whatever needs necessary. It is discovered that Abigail and other girls from the town went into the woods and performed rituals that they believe would help them gain the desires they want. They were found by Reverend Parris, and coming upon a situation such as this, there aren’t many conclusions you can jump to, besides witchcraft. “You drank blood Abby! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!” (Miller, 18) When accused, the only way to save yourself from being hanged is to accuse other of witchery, which leads to plenty of innocent lives lost. John Proctor knows that he is the reason why Abigail is leading the whole town into hysteria, which is why he opposes the trials.
