Abstract

Servant leadership may appear to be a contradiction. How can one lead when one is serving the followers? Through the servant leadership model, a servant leader puts the needs of those they lead first, and serves them. The servant leader uses characteristics that help establish a quality relationship with those they lead and through that relationship is able to support and build employee morale and increase job performance by those they lead. Especially in the field of emergency services, servant leadership is a leadership approach that benefits the followers, leader, and the community they serve. Greenleaf in 1970. Greenleaf had worked in his professional life in management and development, but upon retirement, he started researching the idea that those that serve are really leading. Northouse (2017) describes servant leadership as when, “servant leaders place the good of followers over their own self-interest and emphasize follower development” (p. 226). Although placing the good of followers is a foundational aspect of servant leadership, and is often the primary focus when reviewing this leadership model, servant leadership is also about serving those you serve, including customers, or in the field of emergency services, the community one serves. The servant leadership model includes ten characteristics for leaders to use to implement this approach. These characteristics are; listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community. The emergency services field (law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency medical services) is a field that is focused on serving others, and is a field that benefits greatly from the use of the servant leadership approach. In the emergency services field, high job performance is of utmost importance. When lives of both personnel and the public are at stake, it is essential that job performance be as high as possible. One of the reasons that job performance increases under servant leadership is that a servant leader focuses on followers reaching their goals and potential. For a leader to be aware of their followers goals and their potential, again, they need to establish a relationship of trust, as previously discussed. Through this relationship, leaders become aware of followers professional and personal goals, and are then able to assist them with achieving those goals. In the research brief by the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association, it is stated that “this style of leadership inspires the leader’s staff to be more motivated and proactive in their daily activities.” Under servant leadership, employees are more engaged in the work they are tasked to do, and work to reach their goals, therefore impact the effectiveness of the entire
