Upon reading Chapter 3 of Mimi Markus (2015) text, it is clear that paragraphs are extremely significant in writing. Paragraphs help the writer’s paper illustrate the clarify of words, sentences, and supporting points. Paragraphs that are written appropriately allow any document, manuscript, and or research to group a collection of sentences that identifies and displays a complete thought (Markus, 2015). Nevertheless, paragraphs should be well written and constructed, so that the writer can give the readers a clear and concise understanding of the topic, ideas, main points, and supporting points being discussed. Moreover, the main points and supporting points must be detailed complete sentences as well. Unsurprisingly, paragraphs are found
However, though John Warner’s argument is strong, Kerri smith’s argument is stronger. In Kerri Smith’s article “In Defense of the Five-Paragraph Essay,” She claims that the five-paragraph essay should stay taught in schools as a guideline for a well-structured essay. She explains the five-paragraph essay as an “introduce-develop-conclude structure” that even great expository writing follows this structure (Smith 16). She purposefully communicates to her audience this idea to show that this structure gives students the knowledge and capability to write a professional essay. The five-paragraph essay includes the three key points to have a well-structured and organized essay. By mentioning that other great writers use this form of structure, she creates a stronger argument as to why the five-paragraph essay is important to education. She continues her article by explaining her early stages of writing and how she was taught; over time, her teachers would show her new ways to improve her writing which, in the end, she was told to think “of those five paragraphs simply as a mode of organization” (Smith

A lawyer named Atticus Finch is called to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. The story is told from one of Atticus’s children, the mature Scout’s point of view. The theme innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols.
Level II: Paragraph about the Wall Throughout the novel, Offred and her companion, Ofglen, visit the Wall during their shopping trips. The Wall is where the government displays the criminals who were hanged at the recent Salvation for everyone to see. It is an important element of the setting because it offers insight into other rights the government has stripped away besides women’s rights. For example, the crimes Offred sees displayed are doctors who gave abortions, Jews who did not change their religious stance, and two men who partook in homosexual acts. There are also three women hanged- two handmaids and a wife- for unknown reasons, but it is suspected adultery or murder attempt.
What takes an entire paragraph for some writers to covey is a clipped sentence for Hempel or Beattie. Each word is necessary and saturated with meaning, thus eliminating the need for excess. And no sentence is as important as the first. The initial sentence must incite intrigue and contain insight to the contents of the story. It is the foundation upon which the entire work is built.
Literary Analysis Anthem and Station Eleven are both dystopian novels. Both books relate to the citizen having little to no freedom with the government that is controlling them. Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, she wrote about how the government in this area controls what each person is destined to be whether you like it or not. Whereas in Station Eleven the world has practically ended due to a deadly flu virus and, somehow, ended up with a man as many know as the Prophet attempting to rule the word. Both dystopian novels have a very unfair dictatorship type government.
In the short story “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury he warns society about what the future will be like if we only watch tv and don’t exercise or go outside. Mr Leonard Mead was the only person the ever take a walk in his neighborhood when everyone else would be watching tv. He would say this to the houses as he walked by “Hello, in there, he whispered to every house on every side as he moved”(Bradbury 1). The author is showing us that Leonard is the only person who takes walks and the only person who doesn’t watch tv the entire day. He also shows us that he’s the only one who still cares about the beauty of nature. There is only one police car in the entire city because everyone just watches tv. Since the crime was
The story in 1 Kings 19:1-21 is the conclusion of Elijah’s ministry. Because of this, the author introduced the characters in previous chapters. In order to gain an understanding of the characters in the context of the narrative, prior chapters must be consulted. The main characters of the story are Elijah and Yahweh, surrounded by other lesser characters in this specific narrative.
This passage is an excerpt from Virginia Woolf’s, Mrs Dalloway, found on pages 184 to 185. In this passage Clarissa retreats into an empty room to ponder on Septimus’s suicide, where she experiences a moment of epiphany, identifying the passage as the climax of the story. Woolf uses a variety of literary features to demonstrate the depth and complexity of Clarissa’s emotions toward death and oppression, the two leading themes in Mrs. Dalloway.
We would do research on a subject or a person, and write about them. We, once again, were not allowed to be unique in our writing or think creatively or critically. This is the time when I was taught the five paragraph essay. As stated in Gray’s article, the five paragraph essay is detrimental to students’ writing. This format for writing is damaging because it doesn’t allow students to express their own ideas about a topic. It does not allow for any creativity or uniqueness in a paper. In tenth grade, I wrote many papers for my English class, but I never once got an A on them. I was led to believe that my writing was weak because I could not relate to what I was writing about. I did not have any emotional connection to the research papers I had to write, and it made it harder for me to write them. I had grown up not being allowed to think critically, and therefore, my papers in high school lacked creativity and deeper
The transitional phrases lead the reader into the next paragraph by maintaining their attention with concepts from the previous one.
NOTE: This isn’t even close to how I would like the essay to be laid out. I’m just writing paragraphs and eventually I will get them in an order I like them and revise.
Complex sentences are more likely to be prevalent in formal writing. They provide a lot of detail. However, too many long sentences would easily lose the reader’s interest and would not engage them whereas short sentences are more punchy and quick, however they are not very detailed. T...
...Moreover, by having paragraphs smaller and/or larger then others, it helps the reader identify what is important within the confines of the text.
If there’s one thing that this class has taught me, it’s that one of the single most important aspect to consider in writing, is that of the style. Style can be defined many ways, whether it be an analysis of oneÂ’s writing proficiency and technical accuracy, or the writerÂ’s voice, and how they bring across their message to the readers. Without style, all writing becomes at least one of two things: a boring, dragging piece whose clipped pace turns the reader totally off, or it becomes so poorly written that the question of the author’s intelligence comes into play while reading the piece.
