My current favorite rock song is “Cemetery Drive” by My Chemical Romance. The first time I heard the song, I not only fell in love with the sound, but also the lyrics and their meaning. Whenever I hear the song, certain types of “happy” memories flood my mind and I get this great sense of nostalgia. This song was written by the members of My Chemical Romance, primarily their lead singer Gerard Way. The songs lyrics have had many different interpretations over the years. For the purpose of this essay, I will simply explain the song the way I interpreted it. The song describes a man, the narrator, dealing with the death of his lover. However, the later lyric “Singing songs that make you slit your wrists”, may suggest that she was just suicidal instead. Referring back to the lyric, “And they found you on the bathroom floor”, suggests that she committed suicide from overdosing. In the chorus, the narrator simply states that he misses her, and that remembering her kiss makes her death even harder to deal with. Later in the song, the narrator talks about how self destructive he’s become and that he constantly lies to himself about her death, almost pretending as if she’s still alive. He also alludes to the fact that he might have become suicidal with the lyric “It isn't that much fun, staring down a loaded gun”. He then begins to “talk” to her, and tells her that he will continue to be in constant pain if that’s what she wants. The lyrics “Did you get what you deserve?” and “Is this what you always want me for?” shows the narrator’s pent up anger towards her. He’s begins to think that maybe she deserved death for putting him through all this pain. Also, he may believe she deserved death for making him jealous over her husband.
