A habit is an action a person must perform without even thinking about it. Bad habits have a tendency to be very hard to break and that is because a person has an involuntary response to do whatever the habit is. Many people carry around bad habits such as biting fingernails, smoking cigarettes, and drinking alcohol. Although a person that bites their fingernails will not have as much trouble as a person who is trying to quit smoking; it will still be difficult to break their habit. A person’s bad habits can be caused by any trigger which includes stress, being nervous and even for comfort. It is typical for someone to not realize they are forming a bad habit until it is too late. People who have formed bad habits must have a want to change before attempting to conquer over it, otherwise they will quit and go right back to their habit. Even though breaking a bad habit seems challenging it is possible for everyone, no matter what the trigger is.

Someone who drinks on a regular basis, usually does not even know that they have made it a bad habit for themselves. Most of the time people that have made this habit obtain it from one of their parents. This person may even have unresolved issues with that parent that resulted in the consumption of alcohol to begin with. Once it becomes a habit their body is used to consuming large amounts of alcohol on a regular basis, which means when they stop their body will go through withdrawals making it very difficult for them to continue quitting. Their withdrawals include painful headaches, becoming nauseous, and even insomnia. Drinking can have a lot of bad effects. It can go from getting arrested to ruining your life. It has broken many families up form alcohol abuse. I have personally seen it happen to several.

The disorders could be disposition instabilities, mental illnesses, or coherent difficulties. It is believed that, in most cases, mental disorders and addiction occur concurrently. From recent research, most people who seek addiction treatment have another mental disorder. In this regard, personality plays an extremely vital role in the fight against addiction. Some individuals who are not strong in character may find it hard to fight addiction urges, which eventually lands them into the addicts’ bracket. The solution to this condition is to first accept one’s weaknesses. This may involve consulting a counselor who is able to help to discover one’s personality (Baker, Piper, Mccarthy, Majeskie, & Fiore, 2004).

Biting my nails is a great because it relieves stress and helps with boredom. It is unwanted however because it leaves my finger nails in an undesired state.
According to WebMD, signs of alcohol dependence or addiction are not being able to quit drinking or control how much, the person may experience withdrawal symptoms, and you drink in the morning or are often drunk for long periods of time or drink alone (WebMD website, 2016, para. 3). As of result of Greg drinking, he needs to seek treatment so that he no longer harms himself or others. Those individuals who seek treatment also run the risk of having a relapse. Relapse is often defined as a return to drug use after a period of abstention (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2016, p. 285). To avoid a relapse one should create a relapse prevention plan.
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, alcoholism is defined as "the compulsive consumption of and psychophysiological dependence on alcoholic beverages." It is a problem that can tear apart marriages and families, cause someone to lose his job, and many more negative results. In order to recover from this dependency a person must lose his desire for and dependence upon alcohol, continue to remain sober, and resolve all conflicts caused by the alcohol abuse. Compulsive behaviors are often thought to involve free will. It also is contrasted to be the same as compelled behavior, where the person is under the influence that they are behaving some way under their own accord. If someone resists an impulse it become increasingly difficult to be successful over time. By resisting these impulses, they experience excruciating levels of psychological pain; making it feel literally impossible to resist urges. Compulsive people have not lost the amount of self-control they have, rather that they are over whelmed by the psychological influence of the addictive behavior. These behaviors are not necessarily caused by the irresistible desires, rather habitual repetitive patterns (Henden, Melberg, & Rogeberg, 2013).

In Chapter 9 of “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, Angie Bachmann has a gambling addiction which led her to massive debts. She is a wife of Brian Thomas and have 3 daughters. Angie Bachmann should be held accountable for her gambling debts because her set of rules weren’t working, was tempted by Harrah’s perks, and her environment shaped her to become addicted.

In The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he recounts a story in which a fatigued housewife named Angie Bachmann lost all of her family’s assets, amounting to a million dollars due to a gambling addiction. Every habit has three components: a cue or a trigger of an automatic behavior to start, a routine the behavior itself, and a reward which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future. According to Duhigg, “you cannot extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it” (63). Duhigg suggests that in order to change ones bad habit the “Golden Rule” must be implied. The Golden Rule is a theory of shifting a habit by retaining the old cue and reward, and tries to change only the routine. Duhigg’s answer to the question in the chapter title, “Are we responsible for our habits?” is simply “Yes.” If we have an awareness of our habits, then we are responsible for their consequences. In the case of Angie Bachmann, she should be held accountable for her gambling debts because she was well aware of her own bad habit and did not try to seek for help.

Alcohol addiction can plague one’s life, leading to a wide array of negative consequences. When alcoholics do attempt to quit drinking alcohol, they go through various withdrawal symptoms that dramatically complicates the road to sobriety. Quitting alcohol is far from a simple process and will require much initiative and perseverance on behalf of the individual. Although many alcoholics attempt to quit alcohol by simply by going “cold turkey,” there are more steps that people should follow in order to successfully quit drinking alcohol. For those struggling with alcohol abuse, sobriety from alcohol is a difficult process that will prohibitively improve the life of the addict.

Habits can go un-noticed by people because they vary in seriousness. Breaking habits varies greatly. It can be as simple as not doing something in the morning, to stopping drugs and alcohol.

Some people don’t realize that this is a big deal, the big problem until it’s late. Once someone tried alcohol and become dependent it is hard to realize that person needs help to stop it. Also drinking alcohol is closely linked with use of other drugs, legal and illegal. Smoking, drinking and drug taking often co-exist. I chose this article to review because I think it has good examples to show people what causes alcohol dependence and what conditions one can get if drinking alcohol often. People need to remember that we live ones and it is important to keep ourselves healthy and none of bad habits worth our life.
