Capital Punishment: Argumentation Essay

The death penalty is a controversial issue to discuss. There are some who believe that the crime should fit the punishment. There are also many people who oppose the death penalty. They believe that life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is a just punishment. I am strongly opposed to the death penalty for many different reasons both moral and ethical.

My strongest reason for opposing the death penalty is a moral one. In the Bible, the first commandment clearly states, ¡°thou shall not kill.¡± The commandment does not have any exceptions to the rule and should be followed. Killing someone for a harsh crime such as murder or rape, is just as bad a crime as the original act of murder. I strongly believe that only God can decide when it is the appropriate time for someone to leave this earth, not a court, judge, or a jury. We do not have the right to judge anyone else¡¯s actions because we are not perfect either. God looks at us as all equals with no one man better than the other. So how could we as a society strip God of his power and decide the fate of a man. God is forgiving. God forgives any person who asks for forgiveness, no matter what the sin was. If God the Almighty can be so forgiving why can¡¯t society do the same. There are many arguments in the Bible that do support the death penalty. For instance, Genesis 9:6 states: ¡°Whosoever sheds man¡¯s blood...
