I agree with you about the University not allowing Butch to be at the school was wrong. They should of allowed Butch to be at the school and Brittany probably was not the only one there with a "service dog" that needed it. Service dogs are very helpful to have for people who need them. Your activities that you put down could be really beneficial for someone with anxiety or depression. How could you further help the client with their anxiety and
Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed that all American citizens need to be educated so that they may exercise their rights. He saw public education as essential to a democracy. One proposal he made for public education would guarantee that all children could attend public schools for three years. However, much like other early school reforms, this proposal received much rejection and was never brought into being. Despite this rejection, Jefferson still believed that America needed public education. Eventually, he opened the University of Virginia. Even though his bills and proposals to benefit public education never saw the light of day, he still made many contributions to public education by providing the foundation on how a democracy should handle educating its
The current popular television show “Pit Bulls and Parolees” is combating the negative image of Pit Bulls, that the media has portrayed for so long. The show is a positive example of how Pit Bulls can be rehabilitated, while at the same time helping parolees to adjust back into society, giving both the dog and the parolee a new purpose in life. The majority of these dogs have been rescued from owners who have abandoned the dog, and left them to die. Both the Pit Bull and parolee have been through simular situations, escaping death or the dealth penalty, and offered a second chance at life
Schools are where we spend half of our lives at, our kids are spending time and energy in these places to become better people in the future. There is absolutely no reason why budget cuts should ever happen in a school. If the country is taking taxes from all of the citizens than they should be conscious to spend that money on things that matter like our children. Making budget cuts takes away programs for kids to excel in and makes a child harder to express himself. Arts are usually the first programs to be cut.
It is a beautiful day outside: the sun is shining high in the sky, there is a slight breeze in the warm air, and there are plenty of young children running around laughing and playing in the park. A woman walks her chocolate Labrador down one of the dirt walking trails; people comment on how cute the dog is, and some even let their children go over to pet the dog. Further back, down that same trail, a man is getting into shape by walking his American Pit Bull Terrier. The atmosphere suddenly changes for the same people around this animal. People on the trail try to avoid the dog and few make comments to their children to stay away; “that is a mean dog.” Only this Pitbull is not “mean,” this dog has never hurt a human or another animal in her
In order for a dog to become a service dog they must go through “school” training. Most of the puppies received for this job are bred on the training site so the obedient behaviors of past breeds will continue. The puppies are then sent to live with experienced volunteers or families until they learn basic commands and social interactions. After the fundamentals are mastered, they are returned back to the site where each pup will be spayed or neutered. Only then does the rigorous educating begin. Teaching each dog how to walk, see, hear, and even speak for mentally or physically disabled individuals is so demanding that only around half of the dogs graduate. The other half may have been overly hyper, or too eager to play. Those dogs are put up for adoption as well-behaved pets.
Most people are familiar with service dogs and have seen them in action. Animal-assisted therapy is similar service animals in that an animal-human healing partnership is being created. However, the difference is that therapy pets are typically used to treat a mental disability whereas people with physical disabilities use service dogs to help them in many ways. Therapy animals are used in a wide variety of places, such as, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, therapy sessions, mental healthcare facilities, and even in people’s homes. These amazing animals are used on a wide variety of different disorders, but they are utilized mostly by people suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For people with these mental health disorders, everything in live can be difficult and challenging, however with the help of animal-assisted therapy, their mood, motivation, and life can dramatically improve. Anyone who hears about these brave, loving animals soon falls in love with them. From a medical standpoint, there have been many successful studies and the support for animal-assisted therapy still continues to grow in doctors and therapists across the nation.
As discussed in class, discourse is our communication. Furthermore, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes discourse as a combination of one’s thinking, acting, and language that is associated to a group of others. There are different kinds of discourses; two discourses that will be discussed in this paper are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). The primary discourse in this paper is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with and by having access to and practice with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse in the paper is attending the University of Arkansas and writing this paper. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process I wanted to know if high school is destined. Was my high school experience awful or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With that, I have researched the social construct and applied it to my previous experiences enabling me to truly discover if high school is destined.
The organization I work for is a nursing home management company. That’s the simple definition. Health Services Management Group manages of the operations of eleven (11) skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and three (3) home health agencies (HHA). Each of the SNFs and HHAs are operated/licensed by a single purpose entity. Of these long term care providers, one (1) SNF and two (2) HHAs are operated as non-profit organizations. The purpose of the non-profit providers, ultimately, is to fund The Trousdale School. “Trousdale School serves high functioning adults with intellectual disabilities, providing academics and life skills for the purpose of learning independence.” 1
It was a hard day for me. My dog of almost 7 years had to be put down, and it was the first pet I had ever lost. My dad wasn’t too keen on me getting a new puppy. We started looking at other dogs and my dad found one that he thought we should get. My parents decided to take me on a surprise trip to the animal shelter to get a better look at the dogs that we wanted to adopt. As we entered the dog room, barks started to echo around us and excited dogs jumped up on their kennels to make sure we saw them. As we got to Mack’s cage, I think his puppy face must have melted my dad’s heart because he agreed to adopt him and take him home. Today, years later, I still believe adopting Mack was one of the best decisions I could have made. Through adopting Mack, I was inspired to volunteer at the animal shelter as soon as I was old enough. One day I went up just to look at animals and I realized that there were many dogs that had been in the shelter for a long time. No one was interested in adopting them because they weren’t a popular breed, or they were not the right color. From that day forward, I decided that I was going to find a way for those dogs to be adopted, so they had the chance to be as happy as Mack is, in a home and out of a shelter. By finding a way to positively promote breeds prone to indifference, unwanted color, and through establishing positive behaviors and character, animal shelters will be able to increase canine adoption.
To raise awareness I would get Chico city council aware of this problem happening on campus. Hopefully then it would spread to Butte County City council and from there to more and more universities across the nation. There are two interest groups that would take interest in my solution; American Humane, and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The American Humane interest group does many things that could potentially affect my policy area. They not only improve the lives of pets but also working animals and farm animals. They are one of the top veterinary experts across the nation. It was the country’s first national humane organization that’s both dedicated towards protecting children and animals. That’s why I picked American Humane because if a dog doesn’t get the treatment it needs, it affects humans and other animals. They can help us spread awareness about the amount of dogs that go missing, injured and abused by college students by sending out a set of guidelines of how to take care of your pet the humane way. I find this group important because they have the same pint of view as me. The humans and animals should have equal rights, and both deserve the respect they need. The second interest group, ASPCA, This Interest group believes that all animals are entitled to kindness and respect and should be protected under the law. It’s the first humane
the shocking tragedy made her cling strongly to a cause to help other dogs, like the one
They have a big job to do and it’s definitely not easy. The ultimate goal for all shelter dogs is to get adopted, and eventually find a home. Some amazing dogs have done more than that. They are stories where people say shelter dogs make the best pets. I have read some amazing stories like shelter dogs that have saved lives, and even have became bomb sniffing dogs. I read a story of a man who adopted a black lab, after the recent passing of his loyal hunting dog. The black lab that he adopted Kelly was an excellent hunter right out of the shelter. He had taken it hunting the very next day, and Kelly had done awesome as a hunting dog. The owner said that he got a hold of a porcupine while hunting, and showed no aggression while being treated for the wounds (Fisher). This story was definitely a happy one and I know there are stories like this every
When a pitbull named Oogy was first adopted he was practically an unrecognizable dog. He was pure white except for the left side of his face which shone off rose pink scar tissue. Where his left ear should have been stood only a stump the size of a thumb. His mouth was lopsided with stiches coming out of the right end, and he looked more like a burn victim then a dog, yet he had an imperative look of joy about him. Oogy had been used as bait for dog fighting when he was only ten weeks old. He had been bitten so hard a piece of his lower jaw had been crushed, afterwards he was thrown in a cage and left to bleed to death before he was found by police when they raided the facility and taken to an animal hospital. Many people hardly view animals as anything more than meat and don’t see the real danger animals face every day but animals are abused to some degree more often than not. In the U.S. alone billions are abused a year and most result in death. Despite the fact that many people view animals as a less developed species, animals should have rights because any animal with a will to live should be able to do so without pain or suffering.
Pit-bulls provide immense support for many mentally, physically disabled adults and children including the hearing and visually impaired. The beauty of the companion’s affection has been incorporated into a successful non-profit organization called Soldiers Best Friend which provides aid for qualified disabled veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects many aspects of a person’s life, for instance, these veterans have difficulty being in large crowds or hearing loud noises. However, by introducing a professionally trained Pit-Bull has proven to improve the soldiers ability to live within society, to become less of a recluse, more social able, and gives comfort for the emotionally damaged veteran in high stress situations, such as, going to a sporting event or using public transportation (Martinez 4). While individuals receive a substantial amount of emotional help from these loving animals, others live in fear that this specific breed of dog, Pit-b...
They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. When someone’s best friend gets hurt, they react. Spread the word about animal cruelty and how it should stop. There are many problems around the world about animal cruelty and the statistics have gone up in the past couple of years. There are plenty of actions we could do to fix this problem and we need to react.
