The use of technology has become an integral part of everyday life and has had a huge impact, both positive and negative, on the development of adolescents. Research studies have found that 90-95% of adolescents are able to easily connect to the internet and that they spend on average one third of their day connected to electronic devices (Rose and Tynes, 2015; Londoll, Greca, Lai, Chan, and Herge, 2015). Access to the internet has provided this age group with additional avenues for increasing their intellectual capacity and connectedness with others (Rose & Tynes, 2015). However, the internet has created a new platform that unfortunately is being used as a forum to bully others. This is cause for great concern due to the negative correlation between cybervicitimization and mental health outcomes, for adolescents, who are at a sensitive developmental period in their lives. Adolescents are more susceptible to peer pressure, are less capable of self-regulation, and lack effective coping skills. This developmental immaturity exacerbates the impact of cyberbullying, leading to depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation (Rice et al., 2015). Furthermore, cyberbullying has been found to have an even greater effect on its victims than traditional school based bullying. This is due to many factors including the internet’s ability to reach a wider audience, the anonymity that it provides perpetrators, and the instant and sometimes permanent effect it has on cybervictims (Hamm, Newton, Chisholm, Shulhan, Milne, Sundar, Ennis, Scott, and Hartling, 2015). Bullying has been around for a long time, but the negative influence that it has on society is becoming overbearing. Bullying can occur anywhere, from the workplace to the store, but its main host is the school compound. Bullying in school is a major concern, not just for Americans, but internationally. Some of the negative influences of bullying are depression and anxiety in students, which is causing them to become drug addicts. Also, bullying is one of the major causes of suicide among teens in the United States.
The act of bullying has been present in children’s life throughout time. It has been seen in movies, books, and even real life situations. In recent years there has been in increase in the use of technology and the Internet. As a result a new type of bullying has been introduced to today’s generation of teenagers. Since Teen suicide is the second leading cause of teenage death in the United States, there is a need for legislation that promotes awareness and education about Cyber-Bullying. Due to the growth of technology in the American society, the younger generations of adolescents are adapting to the excessive use of computers, cell phones, and social-networking sites. According to a study done by Amanda Lenhart, 87% of adolescents who are between the ages of 12 and 17 are using the internet on a daily basis (Trolley, Shields, and Hanel, “Demystifying and Deescalating Cyber Bullying in the Schools”).With these numbers increasing across the nation, the numbers of adolescents being harassed through technology means is growing as well. The relationship between cyber bullying and teenage suicide has been named “cyber bullycide”. Studies show that 1/3 of teenagers who have used the internet have stated that they have received threatening or offensive messages either through text, e-mail, IM, and other technology related programs. In 2007 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially labeled “electronic aggression” being cyber bullying as an “emerging public health problem” (Billitteri 387).

According to Webster's dictionary bullying is defined as "one habitually cruel to others who are weaker" Bullying is the leading driver of low self esteem, suicides, low academic achievement and depression. I believe it is a problem because, there are too many teens that are abused by bullies. In 2010 at least 3 million students reported being bully, now think of all the students that are not reporting out of fear. The world would be a lot better if there weren't any bullies on it. The underlying issues with bullying is the student no longer feels safe. The Columbine High school shooting is almost a perfect example of what can happen in the world when bullied victims have had enough . There are countless forms of bullying, but the most common are cyber bullying and school bullying. Another type of bullying called covert Bullying isn't as popular but can cause the same amount of torment. Most people acknowledge that we have a problem, but the punishment the aggressor gets for bullying is really light. Internet usage in children and adolescents has been increasing in a steadily fashion in the past number of years and with the increase in internet usage, a new form of bullying has developed – Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can be defined as “the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person,” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This form of bullying can come through various mediums including but not limited to text messages, emails, videos, and social networking sites. There is an overwhelming amount of information that defines cyber bullying, identifies the demographics of bullies and victims of cyber bullying, and identifies the outcomes of cyber bullying on victims. More focus needs to be placed on who the perpetrators of this form of violence are and how this form of violence is linked to traditional bullying. This will allow researchers and practitioners to move forward with research and implementation preventative methods and intervention once the problem has already occurred.
