Bringing Children To Read

The American philosopher and psychologist William James stated,“So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky” (“William James Quote.”). Bringing children into the world of reading as soon as possible opens up many opportunities for future success. Despite that, a great deal people do not read frequently, and there are countless more who see reading as a chore. Where does this lack of reading stem from? One of the reasons for this problem is that not all children create good reading habits when they are young. According to Glenda A. Gunter, many people who are avid readers for entertainment credit their enjoyment to being able to create a movie in their head. In her experience, some learners have not been taught the ability to create intense visual representations of the text they read. She believes that only learning digitally can inhibit them from gaining and exercising those skills (Gunter). I agree with Glenda’s theory because sometimes digital entertainment and learning does the creative thinking for people, and it takes away the challenge of having to use your imagination. Gunter also thinks that this could cause learners to have negative feelings toward reading because they don’t think it is as engaging as digital presentations or entertainment (Gunter). I agree with this point because if you are used to technology doing all the imaginative work for you, like how certain things look or sound in your head, why would you be attracted to the idea of having to do that yourself? The static nature of reading seems less attractive to people compared to the ever-changing nature of technology. In addition, many people no longer consider reading enjoyable because it is now so much easier to just watch a movie, presentation, or video document. But the thing is, reading can be very interesting and entertaining. And the bonus? It is so much better for your
