Review
Ungifted by Gordon Korman was a really interesting and fun book to read. Throughout the book there was mysteries, clues, and even some funny parts. How the book started with the Donovan pulling pranks and getting sent to this gifted school was very entertaining. However, pulling pranks is not appropriate especially in school, so I would not want to say the main character was good. This character is probably not what I would depend too. In addition, how the stories flowed was very good too. I would definitely recommend this book to someone else because every page of the book is so marvelously awesome. You can enjoy every second of the book and there would be no time of you being bored while reading this book.
The only part
The book had a few characters that I liked, but a lot of characters that I disliked. For example Yasmine was a character that I disliked. I didn’t like her because she brought pain to Paige’s life. Yasmine and Paige were best friends for months in Sixth grade. They were constantly doing fun activities together, like having sleepovers or planning each other’s birthday parties, but all that was ruined by a mistake Yasmine made. In the book “The Mad Among Us-A History of the Care of American’s Mentally Ill,” the author Gerald Grob, tells a very detailed accounting of how our mental health system in the United States has struggled to understand and treat the mentally ill population. It covers the many different approaches that leaders in the field of mental health at the time used but reading it was like trying to read a food label. It is regurgitated in a manner that while all of the facts are there, it lacks any sense humanity. While this may be more of a comment on the author or the style of the author, it also is telling of the method in which much of the policy and practice has come to be. It is hard to put together without some sense of a story to support the action.
My overall opinion of this book is good I really liked it and recommend it to anyone. It is a good book to read and it keep you interested throughout the whole book.
During the process of this research paper this semester sources we have been using different sources to create a strong argument and support my point of view regarding Mexican businessmen in El Paso. Among the sources we are using, primary and secondary, historian Mario T Garcia’s book, Dessert Immigrants: The Mexicans of El Paso, 1880-1920, is one of them, and most likely, the most important. The book was published on September 10, 1982. The book is an exceptional work dealing with details, statistics, and historical events related to the Mexican journey to the United States. In his book, Garcia spent an entire chapter talking about obreros y comerciantes (labors and merchants) and what their economic activities were in order to support their dream of getting enough money in the United States and come back to Mexico afterwards.
Getting one good grade in school is easy, the difficult part is to keep getting good grades. This concept applies to other things also. For example when a group is given a certain privilege they have to maintain it. In the essay “The Unexamined” by Ross Chambers, the author discusses that different races are perceived differently depending on where they are. He says that white people are the superior ones, and they bare the privilege of not being marked by others. While other races are discriminated, the whites are excluded from discrimination. The argument that Brian Philips’s personal article, “Man Up” is an American NFL ritual meant that it’s a heterosexual sport and therefor it's a way of their manhood. If you are not any of those, then you’re considered to be not a man. That’s what NFL is teaching their players to be tough, aggressive, also creates them to be more aggressive toward other teams on the field. It teaches players to suck up serious mental health issues that the players will not seek help for because they are afraid of what the other team may say.
In the book Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer describes his ordeal on one of the deadliest, if not the most deadly, climb to the summit of Mt. Everest. The book begins with a short summary of the events that Krakauer went through on the mountain, after this he then explains his journey in greater detail. Krakauer’s original story of his experience on Mt. Everest was not a book, but a article for Outside magazine. Krakauer mentions this in the beginning of his book, for Outside magazine he was to write a piece on the commercialism on Mt. Everest. The storm that hit Mt. My book, Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code takes place in Ireland and Chicago, during the year 2005 or so. The main characters are Artemis, the boy genius, Butler, his special-forces black belt bodyguard, Holly, a three-foot-tall fairy with, yes, magic, a dwarf with a special talent for burrowing underground, due to his species’ special physical attributes that allow them to ingest several kilos of dirt a second, strip it of any beneficial minerals, and eject it forcibly out the back end.
In Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild, he retells the story of a young man named Chris McCandless by putting together interviews, speaking with people who knew him, and using letters he writes to his companions. Chris McCandless also known as Alexander Supertramp is a bright young man and after graduating from Emory University with all honors, he abandons most of his possessions and travels around the west, making long lasting impact on whomever he meets. He then hitchhikes to Alaska where he is found dead. In chapter 14 and 15, both named “Stikine Ice Cap”, Jon Krakauer interrupts the boy's story and shares his anecdote of going to Alaska to climb a dangerous mountain called the Devils Thumb. Krakaure’s purpose is to refute the argument that McCandless is mentally ill because many others, like Krakauer have tried to “go into the wild” but they are lucky to survive unlike McCandless. While describing his climb, Krakauer exhibits through the descriptions of and uncertainty about personal relationships.
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. The second main conflict in this book is when Wendy decides to go on a walk and then gets attacked by two trackers who try to kidnap Wendy and take her hostage, but Finn comes to the rescue and saves Wendy but the tells Wendy that she is not safe her and has to be alert because she is a Trylle.
Christopher McCandless, also known as Alex Supertramp , died at age 24 1992, went hitchhiking up in the Alaskan Stampede Trail and survived for four months. After his death Jon Krakauer, the famous arthur of "Into Thin Air", went to do research about Chris in order to have a better understanding of Chris McCandless death. Some believed that it was wrong for Krakauer to glorify McCandless’ death and that it was Chris’s fault to go into the wild without sufficient respect for the wilderness. Others believed that his actions reflect the confidence in an individual testing his own strength of character by pushing himself to the limits of his ability. Although, it is correct that it was Chris’s fault for going into the wild unprepared, however,
“The Sweet Hereafter” portrays the grief stricken citizens of a remote Canadian town traumatized by a terrible accident, and the impact of an ambulance-chasing lawyer who is attempting to deal with the grief in his own life. The film also depicts the grieving subjects susceptibility to convert grief and guilt into both blame and monetary gain and the transformation this small community faces after such a devastating event.
The Circle is a 2013 American dystopian novel intended to present a potential future society that has been consumed by the superficiality and power of technology. However, this novel has proven to be an all too near future as Dave Eggers writes about inventions and people that have uncanny parallels to those in today’s society. A prime example is Eamon Bailey, a co-founder of the renowned company, the Circle, who is most recognizable as any of today’s CEOs or founders of companies, most notably Steve Jobs. The Circle also hosts weekly Dream Fridays which hold a striking resemblance to today’s TedTalks. As the novel develops, the idea of this fictional dystopia seems to fade as readers begin to realize that the society Eggers describes is all
Rich Dad, Poor Dad is a non-fiction book written by Robert Kiyosaki. Kiyosaki takes us into his life to describe to us the difference between two separate households and how they manage money. When you first open up the book, you are immediately shown the confliction Robert has between choosing whose advice to follow. His biological father is known as his poor dad who is highly educated but doesn’t make the right choices when it comes to money. His rich dad isn’t his father but is a childhood friend’s father who is also trying to teach Robert how to manage money. Rich dad has very little education background but the way he deals with money is what made him successful. Robert’s poor dad views education as the main principle to success. As long as you do well in school, you will have a good steady job thought poor dad. Poor dad always stated “I’m not interested in money”, and “money doesn’t matter.” Rich dad on the other hand knew how to make money work for him not the other way around. He felt that in order to succeed and make a lot of money, you need to work for yourself and not others. Robert learned many lessons from both dads and he feels he is very fortunate to have had two father figures to teach him and give him examples on how to become rich and successful.
