Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder, otherwise known as manic depression, is a mental disorder in which the individual experiences severe mood swings. This mental disorder “affects approximately 5.7 million American adults, or about 2.6 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year” (National Institute of Mental Health). Extreme happiness, hyperactivity, little need for sleep, and racing thoughts are symptoms of a manic episode. Extreme sadness, a lack of energy or interest in things, an inability to enjoy normally pleasurable activities, and feelings of helplessness or hopelessness are symptoms of a depressive episode. Bipolar disorder affects the physical, mental, and emotional life of the individual. Many people suffering from bipolar disorder become addicted to drugs and alcohol. This is harmful for anyone, but it is even worse for people who have bipolar disorder. “Substance abuse may trigger or prolong bipolar symptoms, and the behavioral control problems associated with mania can result in a person drinking too much” (National Institute of Mental Health).
