Leadership has been one of the most necessary principles yet one of the most difficult to master, but only a few can master it as history has shown. Leadership contains many strengths and weakness a person must have in order to be able to have successful direction. As in the Bible it discusses many stories of leaders that led nations to the ground because of the way they guided their nation. Character is one big aspect within leadership in the bible because it includes honesty, courage, and integrity where they are authentic to the individuals themselves. However, what defines a leader in todays society is the influence they have upon others and the direction they lead their followers. There are five characteristics to the distinctive of biblical leadership. First of which is character, where it distinguishes the difference with one another from morals and qualities. These qualities are important but not as much as honesty, courage, integrity, humility, perseverance, and decisiveness. As the Scripture says, it is from the heart of a person that proper attitudes and actions flow (Proverbs 4:23). Second of which is the calling, this is where they would not concern themselves of who they are leading or how to lead but why they are leading. While the vision of leader in most eyes believe that it comes from the heart and the person but the bible recognizes that it first comes from the flow of God and His call to the leader. Competence is the third characteristic of which it describes that a leader must have skillful hands as well. As Psalm 78:72 states, “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” Yet though in Scripture a leaders character must have congruent compliments within one another to their inner person to allow them to manifest the calling of God. Next is community and this is where leaders may concern themselves with money, profits, and productivity. The biblical leadership applies to having a relationship with the community and people. When Paul described his relationship to the Thessalonians: “Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). Lastly is the characteristic of Christ, where a leader should guide his power and leadership in the name of God and that all of their accomplishments come from a greater power and that is the power of Christ.
