Betty Neuman’s Beliefs versus My Beliefs
Betty Neuman’s theory is based on the knowledge of environmental stressors that seem to have some effects on an individual’s health. As a result, her theory is known as the system model, which shows how certain infection can be prevented, detected and treated early enough so no further damage is done within the body. Regarding Neuman’s view, I agree with her in that one of the characteristics of nursing is that it is a systematic process where one thing leads into another.

Every once in a while people experience fevers in which their body tries to fight off and will remember the pathogens next time human cells encounter them. As patients’ bodies fight off a new diseases, the first process takes longer because there is no memory of that particular virus or bacteria since it is the first time the patient’s immune system deals with it. Afterwards, when the same virus or bacteria enter the client’s body through an opening or surgical incision, the body uses its memory cells from encountering the disease before and fights off the disease faster than it did the first time. For clients to remain as healthy as possible, I would agree about the need to use Betty Neuman’s levels of prevention. Therefore, I would first provide vaccinations to prevent any illnesses from occurring; such as having children’s regular checkups. If there are known symptoms, I need to figure out the problem by doing certain tests and screenings; such as mammograms. Finally, if the patient’s problem is found out, I will know whether or not the patient is in need for surgery. Without Neuman’s levels of prevention, no nurse will know what to do and when to do it. The way in which Betty Neuman influenced the nursing practice is that nurses can now assess the effects of these environmental stressors on the client and assist the client to adjust to their problem if there is any. While assisting the clients, the nurses are helping them achieve optimal wellness through preventions and intervention. (Bourdeanu & Dee, 2013). Using the primary level of prevention, nurses will provide for clients to prevent illnesses with vaccines or bandages. There is no need for nurses to wait until the client’s health is not as good as it should be. Therefore, Neuman created a way for nurses to do certain tasks as soon as possible before certain diseases get worse for the clients. Without Betty Neuman’s ideas of the levels of prevention, nurses today will not be able to know what needs to be done first when a client is
