Military conscription, a very tentative, subject among our country, have some who are for it, including all the benefits it has to offer and some who are extremely against it wholeheartedly. Many governments in history have used this strategy to build a large and powerful military that will be ready and developed in times of war and distraught. I never thought I would say this but I think we should reinstate the draft. It has been years since we have wanted or needed a draft, but in view of the United States being attacked on September 11, 2001, I feel our country must be ready and prepared to defend itself. If being prepared means reinstating the draft, a mandatory summons for military service, then I think we should consider this a reasonable proposal. I think the tragic events of September 11 will evoke most people to agree with me. Since September 11 we have seen a surge of patriotism in this country that seemed hidden for many years. I am so glad patriotism was not lost, and I think most Americans would be willing to defend their country in light of this attack. We are a nation and a people who believe in freedom and democracy. It tells other nations who we are and what we stand for. It is these beliefs that lead me to believe that the people of the United States will do anything to preserve our freedom and democracy even if it means reinstating the draft. I want to prove this notion, but am unsure how to accomplish this. I have not read any recent articles in newspapers or magazines that have dealt with this issue. My textbook was not a source either. So I decided to do two things. First, I went to the Internet for any information, articles, discussions, or statements relating to this issue. Second, I decided to conduct an informal poll. This informal poll consisted of male and female respondents with an age span of eighteen to sixty two. My poll started with classmates in my Western Civilization and Studio Art classes and the professors who instruct these classes. My poll included emailing friends and family who live and work in New York, family currently serving in the Armed Forces, and a family member who is a Veteran of the Viet Nam War. Also included in this poll is a random sampling of the townspeople of Los Alamos. Medical personnel at Los Alamos Women’s Health Services, and the lunch crowd at Café’ Allegro rounded out my poll. This cross section of Americans evoked many feelings and opinions and stimulated many conversations and critical thought. These conversations exhilarated me and the results I obtained amazed me.
The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the GI Bill of Rights (GI Bill), was signed into law on June 22, 1944, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt (United States Department of Veterans Affairs, 2012). It was a pivotal point in history, which has impacted the United States socially, economically and politically. Today, educational benefits are primary tools used to recruit service members. In 2007-2008, about 4 percent of all undergraduates and about 4 percent of all graduate students were veterans or military service members (Radford, 2011). Furthermore, the recent expansions in benefits increase the use of education benefits by veterans will grow almost 5 percent (Simon, Negrusa, & Warner, 2009). To improve the success in higher education, veterans must ensure they keep updated on current educational assistance programs as well as other educational services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and their institutions.

Resolved: The United States should reinstitute a mandatory military draft. To help understand this issue a little more we will define some words. Reinstitute: Something that was put to use, and now is being put to use again. Mandatory: A law permitting no option and cannot being disregarded. Draft: Certain people selected. There will be many different problems if the military draft is NOT reinstituted and there are three major proofs already.
The price of freedom should be borne by all, rich or poor. I learned this first hand as a United States Army Recruiter and a volunteer soldier who fought in two wars representing my country. As a military recruiter from 1971 to 1991, I was tasked with soliciting men and women who were high school graduates to enlist into the United States Army. Often times I would call a home to speak to a graduate about joining the army, and a mother would answer; I would tell her the purpose of my call, and often times her answer would be “not my son”! I would often replay, “well mam, if not your son, then whose son”! I very seldom got an answer but I often wondered if I could read her mind, would she be thinking about whether I should be contacting those young men across town she saw hanging out on a street corner at all hours. Was she thinking that those young men from their low income neighborhood should be the ones that pay the ultimate price of freedom?

“Although conscription has been widespread throughout history, few major world powers have compulsory military drafts today.”(Richards, 2010). This is another major reason why we shouldn't reinstate not many other countries follow the draft and that might be due to the fact that it causes multiple problems. Even having a thought of reinstating the draft is mad what comes down to it is really our safety and the future of this country. If we as citizens are allowed to make our own choices and not be dictated and pushed around as if we are under some dictatorship where we are told what we have to do for this country then peace and harmony should run throughout this country. I guarantee, however, that if the citizens are pushed over the edge that there will be some serious hell to pay and it will not be the greatest moment in this country. Think of those three cons it is better to have citizens that want to fight, then ones that have no urge to fight, it will violate rights that citizens have every right to, and it will not benefit this country not even the slightest. It might even cause some massive tension and chaos between the citizens and the military if the United states were to reinstate the draft. Although some may think that reinstating the draft would solve problems the only way we will solve problems and have a stronger military is if we let U.S. citizens decide if they want to fight or not. The Selective Service Law, commonly known as the draft, requires all male United States citizens and non-citizens, including legal residents, undocumented immigrants, and refugees, through the ages eighteen and twenty-five to register for the draft through the Selective Service System. The military is a vary strict and demanding system, you should be forced to join because it is not meant for everyone. It takes strong people physically, and mentally some people are fit to be in the military.Another reason is medical reasons, some people may not be eligible to serve as demanded. Some people would just simply be scared fighting out on the front lines, that would cause them to flake and that could get them and their teammates killed. That is why people should not be forced to fight in the armed forces.
Although in other countries they make every citizen do one year or more of military service, America doesn’t make anyone practice in the military. Being in military training for at least one year isn’t a choice that most american citizens would like to be mandatory.
This country was founded on the thought of people getting to choose what they want to be, but mandatory military service defies the right to choose freely.
Accroding to Worldatlas.com we have the worlds 2nd largest millitary. China has a larger military than us but are technology and money is far beyond them. Also there population is almost 4.5 times bigger than our own. With our army being this large already there is clearly no reason to force everyone into serving. According to WashingtonPost.com in 2011 we spent 718 billion dollars on our millitary. That alone is almost 1 eighteenth of our entire debt since 2001, so if we are trying to reduce the amount of money spent on military why spend money on troops that aren't need? Spending more money on the military would be a total waste considering we are already the superpower of the world. We are trying to lead countries into becoming democracies, not frighten them by adding more and more power to our military.
