Everyone would have something that they want to get once in their life. However, are those items that teenagers always wanted necessary? I believe not. In modern time, many people would get absorbed by the additive advertisements and would be convinced to buy something that they do not even need. Nevertheless, it is good to have something that is unnecessary at some point for teens to relax or fit into their peers. As a result, the appropriate balance for what teens should buy is needed. Ways to balance the wants and needs are to learn the efficient way to spend money, the amount of items that they should get, and the ability to fix or reuse items until they are no longer functional. According to the article “Start with Toddles: Share, Save and Spend”, the author’s company “uses a three-jar system: share, save and ‘spend smart’ jars” (Lanza). I believe that the three-jar system is very useful for potential teenagers to use money wisely. The share jar can help children build a good habit of helping others. The saving jar can teach the importance of saving money for future usage. Lastly, the “spend smart” jar can teach children to spend money efficiently, which had been balanced between wants and needs because they would think deeply by the word “spend smart”. For example, when children received a total of ten dollar allowance from their parents, five dollars are required from the parents to put in the save jar. In the video “Worn Wear”, people are using the clothing efficiently and passing it to their next generation. The old surfer man even fixed the surf shorts multiple times in order to keep it functional (Worn Wear). Clothing is another important category that teenagers spend most of their money on. They want to impress their peers by wearing something unique or to keep up with the trends. However, this results in teenagers buying many expensive clothing that they may not even wear for over a year. After watching the video “Worn Wear”, I believe that it will be very helpful to use items until they are no longer usable or fixable. Being able to fix or reuse can not only eliminate the amount of money that teens spend on their wants, but also to be able to put more budget on their needs. Back to the example of clothing, there are many different ways to reuse or renew them so that it can keep up with the fashion trend, such as cutting some parts out, adding new things in, or simply wear it in a different way. Nevertheless, there is always some clothing that teens really want that they cannot make by themselves, but if teens can eliminate the amount of money that they spend on their wants, they are able to buy their wants once in a while and put more balance of their budget in their needs at the same time.
