Credit cards are something that are almost needed in everyday life now, as most dont have the money available to purchase a car or house and so need credit, thus needing credit cards to help build that credit. Those cards are hard to handle, and receiving applications in the mail daily, and commercials appearing on television don’t seem to make the struggle of staying away any easier. This starts to spark an interest. So people begin to think, "I think I 'm responsible enough to get a credit card, I 'll only use it for emergencies." Then the application process begins and it may take a couple times to finally be approved for one. Instant gratification or easy access to almost everything is necessary, to have the right clothes and the right shoes, but usually they have no money to buy it with. This is where credit cards come into play, and where many individuals see credit cards as free money. They assume that they can buy it now, and of course, pay it later assuring themselves and their family that they will have the money. This comes down to responsibility; can college students handle budgeting their money? According to a study conducted by a Midwestern University shows approximately 66% of college students did in fact own at least one credit card. Some students can handle it and some can’t, it all depends on what priorities that person has. If buying a hamburger or new video game and not thinking about it is more important than paying that purchase off and establishing credit than those priorities are not good. The debt will never get cleared up if charges keep appearing on the bill, and even when purchases stop the debt is normally so extensive it takes months if not years to pay off and it can completely plummet a credit score. Also, “College students who are unprepared for financial decision making may make risky decisions such as compulsive spending and debt accumulation. Financial stress impacts both academic achievement and retention.”Stores will try and get many to sign up for their cards and they do this by offering deals. The more cards owned, the more available to spend, which will lead right back into debt. However, a good idea to stay ahead is to pay as much off as much as possible each month. It does not have to be paid in full, but try to at least pay more than the minimum. Debt is all over the world, it 's not just with college students, but with older people as well but college students need to know what debt is good debt and when their limit is before they are drowning in
