Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified health professionals who are trained in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. Athletic Trainers can help you avoid unnecessary doctor visits and disruption to your normal daily life of working out and playing. Athletic Training first emerged during the 20th century at Olympic Games. The history of athletic training draws on the disciplines of exercise, medicine, physical therapy, physical education, and sports (Prentice). The 1950’s brought out the National Athletic Trainers’ Association or also known as NATA. In 1970 a curriculum specific to Athletic Trainers emerged (Kragenbrink). Maximum requirement for an Athletic Trainer is to have a bachelor’s degree and be CPR and first aid certified (“O*NET Online. National Center for O*NET Development”). Getting a bachelor’s degree would take you 4 years to complete. Depending on what degree you want to achieve, the time will be longer or shorter. The cost of the education and training would all depend on where you went to college. You would go to an accredited college or university to get you education. In order to be an Athletic Trainer you have to have some special skills including active listening, which is giving full attention to what people say, asking questions, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. You also need to be sympathetic towards the players. “You need to have a strong work ethic and love what you do” (Hargis). Another special skill you need to have is being able to monitor performance of yourself and others.You have to be able to talk to others to convey info effectively. Wages for 0-1 years in athletic training for the polls of 2011 is $34,623 (Athletic Training Salaries on the Rise According to Latest Survey). The maximum salary I can get is $42,090 according to polls in May of 2012 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Factors that affect the salary range would either be what degree you have or how many years you have been an athletic trainer. Having a Bachelor’s degree is $42,090. A Master’s degree is $51,144,Doctorate degree is $76,262. One benefit would be helping those who are in physical pain and improving sports performances are a big benefit of being an athletic trainer.
