The Ethics of Gun Control
Recently we've seen reports on the media of police “misusing” firearms, citizens acting out, and school shootings. However, how are all of the following related? Well, the main connection is gun violence. As many of us know gun violence has been a controversial issue in the past and even now in the present. And because gun violence is a controversial issue that continues to exist, it has raised questions about gun control such as whether or not our country should have gun control. Some people argue it’s pointless because it raises other crimes, and others argue they benefit the people of the country in a number of ways. Although each side of the issue has reasonable arguments for their side. I believe the best choice for all of us is a country with gun control. So in this paper I will begin to define what gun control is, and how its purpose benefits us as people according to utilitarianism, egoism, and a deontological.

First off, utilitarianism is a theory that we ought to concern ourselves with the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. With that being said, gun control, which again limits gun ownership, can be supported with a utilitarian argument. For example, by restricting gun control with laws it reduces the possibility of lives getting hurt or even killed. For instance, background checks prevent criminals and the mentally ill from owning a firearm. If anyone was able to purchase a firearm, then society would be more exposed to gun violence. One prime example that gun control does reduce crime is Australia. In 1996 Australia banned guns from civilian’s hands and destroyed 650,000 firearms. Doing so, it resulted in a 59 percent drop on gun related
