People all over the world are suffering from mental illnesses whether it is anxiety, depression or illnesses such as schizophrenia. Allowing mental health buildings to close is releasing patients who are not mentally stable to be on their own out into the world. Patients need to have an easier access to mental health services because majority of the population are suffering from mental illnesses of all kinds. Poverty has also linked to mental health within our society. There needs to be a solution to this issue and I hope by the end of this paper I can have a solution that will benefit the world someday. The decrease of mental health services has affected the nation in many ways. About 60% of the population with mental illnesses are not able to find the treatment they need. As one can see, this is a huge problem within our nation. Although mental illnesses are a problem, substance abuse is also affecting a huge amount of the population daily. Children can also have effects from mental illness. Statistics have shown that children are 1.86 times more likely to report an emotional condition once they hit adulthood. Living in poverty also influences children. When children do not have the resources they need while they are young, then they are more likely to keep to that lifestyle as they achieve adulthood. In the United States alone, 57.7 million individuals suffer from mental illness. These illnesses range anywhere from mood disorders to anxiety disorders or to personality disorders and so on (The Numbers Count: Mental Disorders in America). 18 to 25 year olds make up about 30% of these individuals alone (Survey Finds Many Living with Mental Illness Go Without Treatment). These individuals require care from medication to psychiatry or even to confinement. However, of these 57.7 million individuals with mental illness, studies have found that less than one in three of these individuals receive proper treatment (Studies Say Mental Illness Too Often Goes Untreated).
There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
This essay is based on the subject of mental illnesses through mental institutions, but on the perspectives of how fear amongst the mentally ill patients and professional health care workers is driven by them. Within this assignment patient’s experiences with in mental hospitals. Thus looking at how beneficial mental institutions are for the mentally ill people that have been sectioned. Poverty in mental health prevents patients from seeking out medical attention due to lack of insurance. “insurance coverage disparities make mental health care less accessible than other forms of health care” (Safran, 2011). Due to lack of insurance patients are not receiving adequate care, such as being evaluated, receiving the appropriate treatments, and not going to doctor follow up appointments to ensure proper care. Without receiving proper treatment, it can cause the patient condition to get worse and would not have a chance of a successful outcome. Lack of attention is another health disparities, due to lack of attention, there is limited funding sources to help mental health patients. Since there is a lack of funding these individuals are not getting the appropriate help that is needed. As well since mental health lacks attention and funding, there are limited mental health institutions, so people who need to be institutionalized may be required to be relocated to another city/state. With those statistics, it calculates out to be that 27,907,200 people did not receive the proper care that they need. The reason is because mental illness can affect any age group despite of race, ethnicity, and gender. It causes number of negative impacts to individuals, their families, and society. Therefore, it is very essential that we pay greater attention to promotion and prevention in mental health in order to reduce the burdens of mental illness. First of all, we can improve nutrition for people, especially children living in poverty by providing nutritional interventions such as food supplementation (WHO, 2004, p.24). Good nutrition helps them to maintain good physical health and improves education outcomes. It reduces their risks for mental illness. Out of all the children with a mental illness forty percent of them have two or more mental illnesses. A child with a mental illness has a greater chance of developing even more mental illnesses as an adult. An adult with one or more mental disorders are less likely to work or participate in the community in a positive light (cdc.gov). The abundant number of children who had trouble in school, getting along with their peers, and shying away from their family because of a mental illness are not likely to be attending further schooling or working in their adulthood. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
