Recommended: Social media and its effect on our generation

The twenty-first century has been marked by the arrival of extraordinary and futuristic technologies such as the smartphone. This device is so vital to our modern-day society inasmuch that we rely on it in almost every aspect of our daily life for tasks such as GPS navigation, cooking, instantaneous communications, entertainment, and research. Not to mention that every single bit of information that we humans have archived during centuries is available to any kid with a smartphone. Certainly, as the video Smartphone Dumb People Animation (2016) provided by Nata Riawan in his YouTube channel shows, there has been a lot of debate on whether smartphones are making us smarter or dumber. Moreover, the Smartphone Dumb People Animation video can be analyzed based on its audience, purpose, structure, and language. The video’s targeted audiences are teenagers and adults with smartphones. It is easy to infer this from the video because all the characters shown belong to these age categories. Additionally, the visual shows a traffic accident where an adult gets run over for being distracted on his phone. In contrast, children are unaware of the dangers of using a smartphone while driving or walking across a street, and only parents can teach them …show more content…

As stated before, the author inclines to express his opinion and feelings in the visual. For example, he writes: smartphones close our eyes to the real world and open them only to a screen (Riawan, 2016). This type of language is very powerful when it comes to convincing people to change their minds. The author uses it to encourage individuals to evaluate themselves to see if they feel lonely when being in a public environment and to turn off their phones and go laugh with their friends (Riawan, 2016). In fact, a Rutgers University professor challenged his students to power off their phones for 48 hours and report back with their experience (Rosen). Many felt almost lost without it and one young women described the feeling “…like I was going to get raped if I didn’t have my cell phone in my hand” (Rosen).
