Several United States presidents are controversial topics, possibly one of the utmost controversial is the 7th president, Andrew Jackson. Many writers will argue that he is one of the worst presidents and also a scumbag. I understand that others may have that opinion of him as a result of information they are given. They are told about his actions, but not entirely what he meant by such actions. Andrew Jackson worked for the citizens of the United States and wanted nothing other than to keep order and remodel the best of the situation they were in at the time. Jackson wanted to give back to the people, and he heard their pleas for an end to the national bank, he followed with their request and when the charter for the national bank come into question of reinstating, Jackson vetoed it. He believed that the national bank had too much power; In Jackson’s Bank Veto Message to Congress he states that “I perceive none of those modifications of the bank charter which are necessary, in my opinion, to make it compatible with justice, with sound policy, or with the Constitution of our country…” Jackson goes on to describing the bank as a “Monopoly of foreign and domestic exchange.” Also he has come to the conclusion that “The present Bank of the United States...enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking.” By closing the bank, Jackson gave more power back to the states and it’s people, while stripping the richer class and the bureaucrats of their power to control who runs the bank. Along with his deeds in the office, Jackson also had an abundant amount of compassion. This feeling stemmed from his roots. Jackson was plucked from the same tree as the common people that he served in his presidency. Jackson only wanted the best for the citizens of the United States but, some writers will argue that he was a racists and had no compassion for those of colour. These acts even gave a hint at him being an autocrat as aforementioned. When the National Bank Controversy Document one came out, it began to show how he was not a democrat. In this document, he was pictured as being a king which was considered tranny for the newly formed America. In it, he is wielding his veto powers in one hand and has ripped up documents on the floor. He as described as “born to command”. If Jackson was truly a democrat, he would be serving the people and being shown as having more power than them instead of being shown as a tyrant. Andrew Jackson also known as, “The people’s choice,” was a self made man. He represented the South and the Western frontier expansionism. He was a strong military leader, a superior Court judge, and an Indian fighter. Jackson represented the common man. The United States of America benefitted greatly from the actions of Andrew Jackson.
Jackson was a strong opponent of the unequal and aristocrat dominated economic structure of most of America. He was very against the Bank of America because he believed it to have a monopoly on banking and felt that it was owned and run unjustly by wealthy aristocrats who were not always Americans (B). It must also be noted however, that while the Bank of America was undoubtedly corrupt (Nicholas Biddle is known to have given sums of money to close friends, and was also known to regularly bribe newspapers and similar media.) it also did what it was supposed to do very well. It provided money and credit to many of the lower classes that Jackson defended, and also was the source of much economic growth. As a result of this veto Jackson established pet banks in many Western areas to try to appease his main group of supporters and build up the rivalry between the agrarian South and West and the industrial North (C). Many immigrants found that one of the first things they discovered upon entering America was a sense of economic equality and lack of poverty, which are exactly the things Jackson was working towards (D). The case Charles River Bridge v. Warren Bridge decided that a charter given a person or group to do a service does not allow that group to have complete rights over this service. This decision supports the Jacksonian Democracy ideas that the rights of the community are more important than the rights of business (H).
Throughout the Jacksonian era the Jacksonians proved to be violators of the United States Constitution and not the guardians they believed themselves to be. Both the Jacksonians and President Jackson went against the Supreme Courts regarding cases that were said to be constitutional. In the Supreme Court case of Cherokee Nation v. Georgia, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee Nation. This ruling of the Supreme Court did not stop Jackson and the Jacksonians from driving the Cherokees off of their land, and by doing this the Constitution was violated. Also, when dealing with the south, Jackson and the Jacksonians were not guardians of the US Constitution. In vetoing the national bank, Jackson did so because he thought that the act that created it was not compatible with the constitution. However, the Supreme Court had already ruled that the bank was constitutional. In this act Jackson and the Jacksonians were not guarding the constitution, but they were utilizing it to suit their own needs. However sometimes the Judiciary and Executive branches agree such as the incident when South Carolina declared a reduced tariff void and threatened to secede, President Jackson responded in an unconstitutional manner. Jackson threatened to send militia to enforce the tariff implementation and the Jacksonian Congress passed a bill approving this military force, if necessary.
Before Andrew Jackson became president, he had a rough life. His parents died when he was young so he grew up without guidance. Jackson was in all the fights he could pick and to many, a wild child.
