One positive aspect of the book is how Sanford includes actual accounts of the massacre from the survivors, instead of briefly summarizing them herself. It would be quicker and easier for her to briefly point out what the testimonies said and what aspects they had in common. I thought reading the perspective of the massacre from different people like a widow, someone who was recruited to be a member of the Guatemalan army, someone who was forced to become a member of the army, etc. gave me a new perspective on the massacres. These testimonies and the pictures give the reader an emotional tie to the data that is being presented. I believe using the emotions of the reader helps them see her point that they Guatemalan army intended to harm their

I felt the arguments that Rauchway provided were fairly accurate creating a balance of both sides of the story.     After reading the story, I found I had mixed emotions about it. To explain, when we were getting into detail and finally finding out what really happened the day of June 28th, I found myself completely interested and glued to the book. I also enjoyed the way the incident was explained because I felt like I was there watching it all happen from the great detail. I enjoyed Phillips style of writing because through his writing, he really came off as an intelligent person who is very familiar with the legal system. The book is an easy read, and I liked the non-pretentious style of writing. I did not find myself struggling with reading the book at all, which made the overall experience that much more enjoyable.

Another intense portion of the book was that of the strikers’ raid on the apple orchard in which they attacked their replacements, for it showed the type of brutality that the strikers could carry out to send their message. The scene where Mac tortures a young boy who was caught around Anderson’s barn when it was set on fire is also a very intense scene. The aspect of the book that I did not care for was that of their being no explanation of what happened after the strike was resolved. It would have been interesting to learn about the type of effect that the strike had on the people, as well as what type of change occurred among them. Because of the interesting perspectives that this book provides, I would recommend that others read it. I would especially recommend this book to those who do not fully understand the power of the group and how it can be manipulated by its leaders, because the book goes into great detail of how this is accomplished. I would give this book a four star rating ****.

    I thought that all of these events that were building during the course of the novel, with the poisonings and accelerating violence, would lead to the ending being more action packed. For example, I was expecting the ending to be a revolt or even just the start of a revolt, and the actual ending was much more intriguing because it was devoid of action but full of meaning. Having the novel end with Lissette pledging to keep her child and pledging for the child to grow up free was very impactful. It showed that while Lissette was not part of the revolution that she was a number of the growing population that provided that sentiment to fight captivity that eventually led to the revolution. Another interesting part was the juxtaposition between Lisette and her Aunt Briggette. Brigette chose to rebel against slavery by performing abortions for slaves and preventing children to be born into slavery, while Lisette pledged at the end to keep her child, but make sure it was born into freedom and not slavery, or she will not allow her to be born at all. Which to me seems more like Lisette will die for her freedom with the child as opposed to her getting an abortion. Overall, The Infamous Rosalie provided a unique view into Haitian slavery and was an excellent read that provided a very wide and complete view of the horrors and developments of slavery in the French colony, and provided the sentiment that were the seeds to the eventually successful revolution much later in
