Everyone should alway try. No person should ever stop trying. Even when something is hard that does not mean we should stop trying. It is not good to give in just because it does not work the first time or we can not find the right way. In “The Marble Champ,” by Gary Soto, Lupe Medrano the main character, has a very hard time with sports. She is not good at any of them. The theme in The Marble Champ seen by Lupes experience is to always stay determined, and never give up. We see Lupe demonstrate this all throughout the story. She wants to win the championship, and is going to try her best. When it came time to compete Lupe beat her first opponent easily. Lupe beat many of her opponents later. You can tell that Lupe is doing good and is determined to win. You can tell that she is trying hard to beat the others. When Lupe came to her last opponent thing started to not go very well. Lupe had blasted two marbles, but she missed her next shot. Even though this happened she was still determined to win. When they continued playing Lupe git dust in her eyes. When it was her turn she missed very badly. Even though bad things are happening to Lupe that is not stopping her from trying. She is still trying very hard to win the championship. “I did it!” Is what Lupe sad after she won. Lupe finally did it. She finally won at something. Lupe found a sport that she could do, and she won at it. Lupe was the marble champ. It is really good that Lupe finally did it. She now has something that she can do. If I were Lupe I would be so so proud of myself, and if I were someone that helped Lupe get to where she was I would be so proud of her. Lupe stayed determined all throughout the championship. During the Olympic race in Berlin, Louie was falling behind and losing hope of finishing. " Then he found himself thinking of something Pete once said: A lifetime of glory is worth a moment of pain. Louie thought: Let go" (Hillenbrand 36). After thinking of what Pete said, Louie began regaining hope and started to push himself past the finish line. This reveals that thinking of something Pete said could make Louie realize that even if it hurts to finish its worth the moment of victory in the end. Therefore, because of this flashback, Louie became motivated to finish the race.
“It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game” is a quote by Grantland Rice which suggests that winning is not important as long as one tries their best. In the movies “Chariots of Fire” and “Next Goal Wins”, the notion and meaning of sport is explored in both similar and dissimilar ways. Although “Chariots of Fire” and “Next Goal Wins” both follow the journey of sport and competition, the characters in the respective films show contradicting views on the idea that winning or losing sport is unimportant in light of the best effort.
We were going to win the game. That was the end of it. I knew it. We were the winners of that game. I stood up and yelled in a voice that even frightened me. I didn’t scream about moving our feet, or calling the ball, I screamed about how big of winners we were. I was done with moping. Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The theme of this poem is about a high school basketball star that has become less successful in the future. The theme focuses on the point that if one doesn’t work hard on their goals, they will never reach their dreams. Also, if you do not reach your goals you can end up living a disappointing life. In the poem, the theme evidently shows that Flick is not necessarily despondent, but out-of-place which carries throughout the poem. The poem stated that, “the ball loved Flick (16)” and “he was the best (14),” and this allows everyone to see that it is not just Flick who looks upon his past with a sort of admiration and pride. It is everyone in the city, and he is the local hero. The boy who didn’t exactly make it big, but he made it big enough that he’s remembered.

During sectionals, our county’s championships, we were seeded against the second best doubles team in the area. Due to this essay’s prompt, you already know that this is no Hail Mary match or heartwarming underdog tale, but rather a story of failure. We lost the entire match in less than half an hour. But the whole time, I remember laughing, bonding with my teammate, and just enjoying myself. I learned that I’m not always going to be the best at everything or the winner of the match, but that doesn’t mean that I should stop trying or stop enjoying myself. After having a conversation with the man who brutally attacked his father and left him to suffer, Don Lupe’s son takes pity on Juvencio and tells his men to kill Juvencio quickly. Juan Rulfo describes this merciful action in the passage, “There he was, as if they'd beaten him, waving his hat against the ground. Shouting. Immediately, the voice from inside said, ‘Tie him up and give him something to drink until he gets drunk so the shots won't hurt him.’” In this scene, Juan Rulfo shows that the son, even after reliving the story of how Juvencio murdered his father, still has a certain amount of empathy for Juvencio, though it is clear that Juvencio felt no empathy for Don Lupe. The son still orders his men to kill Juvencio quickly and to get him drunk, unlike when Juvencio killed Don Lupe and left him to suffer for two days. This demonstrates that Don Lupe’s son is still a compassionate person, even when dealing with the man who murdered his father. Life is full of obstacles and challenges that occasionally require help from family and friends, and steps that we all must take. As human beings, we are constantly learning throughout these steps and challenges. So in this sense, life is similar to a game of soccer because just as in everyday life we go through the same obstacles, and have people there to support us. In a game of soccer, players, acquire cuts and scrapes just as we gain experiences throught our lives, and once the game is over we celebrate with our team, or with family. Life is like a game of soccer in terms of important people, accomplishments, obstacles, and perseverance.
The championship game loss helps the audience, especially young adults with high, aspiring dreams, to understand, that even if you do work-hard and aren’t awarded with winning your goal, this isn’t the end of your journey. It only means you have to work harder in the future, if you want to succeed at your goal. This conclusion shows young children how to lose properly and how to be grateful for what they have, since being good a winning is a much easier task. For like a quote from Colin Powell, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” The under-class, basketball players learned from the mistakes in the title game, so they could go farther and win next year’s championship, because failure should never be your excuse to not attempt something.
It doesn’t matter if they are failing or success, the only thing matter is how hard people are trying during the process. The value of success will worth and have respect after they walk through failure. It’s important on how people stand up after they failed, not how they failed, because everyone will fail at least one time on their life. A good example of people who fail but they stand up and learn from it is people who play sport. At first time of playing, no one will good at sport. When kids win a game or many games they can get to confident and become mean and cocky winners, but if kids experience a loss, they can get an understanding for the other team or player.
