Belief determines behavior. That is why Paul’s first expression of gratitude is regarding their belief in the message of the gospel. What we believe determines how we behave. Paul affirms their belief and then he affirms their behavior. Paul mentions in 1:5 that their generosity toward him had been constant from the very first time they heard the gospel right through the day that he was writing this letter (a span of about 12 years). The Philippians contributed their time and talents when Paul was in Philippi and their financial support over the years when Paul preached in other towns. Throughout his life, the apostle Paul refused to accept payment for his ministry work. Paul made a decision to earn a living through a trade (making tents) so that he could provide his pastoral care at no expense. He did this for two reasons. First, he wanted to create some separation between his ministry and that of the false teachers. Paul observed that the underlying motive of the false teachers was not a love of the truth, but a love of money. They misused people through their teaching. Paul desired that his life glorified God and brought people to Christ. Second, Paul wanted to set an example to other Christians of the importance of having a servant’s attitude. He emphasized that most clearly in Acts 20:33-35. Paul had a servant’s attitude but he did not insist on doing everything without the help of others. He allowed the Philippians to generously minister to his needs. Why? Paul knew he was blessing his fellow believers by giving them an opportunity to serve. That is Paul’s point in 4:17-19. Paul’s needs were met through the Philippians’ generous support. These good deeds not only benefited Paul, but it also benefited the Philippians.
