The increased globalization of the world has had a profound effect on human rights, and has further muddied the unclear distinction between sex trafficking and prostitution. Prostitution has been a moral quandary for society for centuries, and the debate regarding it has risen into the political arena as legislators discuss legalizing prostitution. As there is a societal debate, there is also a political and academic debate regarding the merits of legalization and prohibition of prostitution. Current scholars discuss the implications of legalizing prostitution and its effects on sex trafficking, while also considering the current limits within legislation. In, “Legalizing Prostitution: Morality Politics in Western Australia,” Ronald Weitzer describes the impact of morality upon the political debate concerning legalization of prostitution in Western Australia. Within the debate, there were many moral crusaders that attempted to sway the government debate towards abolishing legalized prostitution. He also explains that in the discussion regarding the legislation both political parties employed different sources in attempts to appeal to the moral arguments, either for or against prostitution. This dependence upon morality makes the arguments weaker and the evidence provided displays a bias, and reduces the government’s ability to create legislation that can properly regulate the sex work industry. Further contributing to a moral argument for legalized prostitution, Simanti Dasgupta explains the moral implications and the silence that sex workers are forced into in the article, “Sovereign Silence: Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Legalizing Sex Work in Sonagachi.” The policies she describes take away a sex workers agency and limit the government’s ability to protect the sex workers. ***Need to find sources related to moral argument against sex
