Badminton is one of the most unique sports in the world, because it brings so many factors of skill sets such as speed, strength, durability, timing and many more (Clement, 2004). Thus, considering that badminton is the second most popular participatory sport in the world, just behind soccer, and is considered the fastest racket sport (Clement, 2004). Throughout this research task there will be people are going to want more ways to get stronger, faster and smarter at the sport. And so, in order to be able to accomplish that there is certain test that can be taken to find out how you compare to a top-level badminton athlete. Power is used for a range of different shots in badminton such as a smash or an overhead clear, these both being very effective shots if used at the right time. Power in sport is all about the mathematical side. Explosive power, which is used for such things a smash in a badminton game is determined on the athlete’s ability to exert an utmost amount of force in the shortest possible time interval (Syatt, 2012). The force comes because of the contraction of the muscles involved in the overhead hitting action. Therefore, the stronger the muscles are, the more force they can apply to the shuttle being hit (Badminton England, 2014). The reason power is so vital in badminton is because hitting the shuttlecock with more power also increases the accuracy of the shot (Badminton England, 2014), therefore having better accuracy means you can position where you are going to hit the shuttle to win over the opponent. There were two fitness tests that were conducted to test the explosive power of an athlete, in this case, it was tested on me. Two of the explosive tests was where there was a vertical jump test (Sargent Jump) and a standing long jump test (Broad Jump). On the sargent jump I scored a difference of 49cm which is average for a male. And on the broad test I measured a score of 200cm (Appendix 1) which is poor for males (Badminton Australia, 2008).
