In this generation, more men feel the desire to be more of a caregiver to their children, but often lack the resources to do so. There is an immense amount of stereotypes placed on men and women that stop them from being the parents that they may want to be. As a society, there should be more steps taken to move to a more gender equal world. In order to do this, there needs to be more resources available for both men and women, such as time off and the elimination of a glass ceiling and gendered division of labor.

Currently, women are still carrying on the heavy parenting and house labor rolls. Overall in the workplace, there is still a huge wage gap for women, and not enough family leave for men. Many women go home after working and take on heavy childcare and housework roles, and are not compensated for this. A lot of women are doing almost double the work as men, between their day job, and motherly duty, but men are still being paid more. This idea was first brought up by Thomas Paine in 1797. Now there is an argument for a U.B.I, or universal base income. This stems from Paine’s idea but is a bit more “realistic”. It would provide every family with the same income every month. This is obviously something that is not plausible, because there are cons brought up, like people being paid to be lazy and do absolutely nothing. However, this would benefit many people as well, such as single mothers who cannot keep up with demands, or stay at home mothers who could use that money for expenses or savings, or even to get away from abusive relationships. The U.B.I has a lot of pros, but is definitely something that is unavailable at the moment

According to CNN Money, “men still make more than women in most professions -- considerably more in some occupations than others, according to a new study by the job search site Glassdoor”. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
In today’s society a woman can go to work and the man can stay home and look after the kids and it is perfectly normal. In fact 20% of women make $5,000 more than their spouse. When women are actually given the same jobs as men, they may be paid the same but typically, they are not able to reach the higher positions in the company that men do. Even with their 77 cents to a man’s dollar, “women still tend to bear a larger responsibility for child care and other household matters within families” (Mazorelle). Traditional gender roles in the United States and other societies have always been dictated as where the man goes and works for a salary as women stay at home to take of house related work. However, many changes in the traditional family has made gender roles go through significant changes. Many women have gone through college and have obtained college education degrees, which has allowed women to advance their careers. The break down of rigid gender roles and the increase in participation of women in the workplace have granted women more choices in life. The choices many women now have in there career fields has made some controversial views on the intelligence of women achieving the status of their male counterparts The first view obtained in the workplace is the ability to make a even paying field for both men and women. Many constituents have pledge to achieve equality for women through laws forbidding the use of any sexist policies that may constitute discrimination against sex. Today, women are not typically seen in higher levels of position in the work force than men. In Anne-Marie Slaughter’s article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All”, she uses her own experience to convey why it is not possible for a woman to work in a higher position, due to women being more emotional than men. People still believe it’s a women’s place to stay at home to cook, clean and take care of the children, while the men go to work to pay the bills. And it’s considered odd if the man is a stay at home father and the woman is working 24/7 and is never home. Even though it is rewarding to be able to always be there to see your child’s milestones in their life. It is always nice to get away from that life for even a moment. I don’t mean going out with the girls or guys, while you hire a babysitter, but helping your husband or wife pay the bills, so you have two rather than one income coming in at the end of the month. In Richard Dorment’s article, “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” he states that both men and women can’t have it all. I agree with both Slaughter and Dorment, but not entirely. Children learn gender roles based on parental socialization, meaning what is talked about by society and what is culturally accepted. They learn based on what they watch or what they hear and see from their family, friends, and school. The children learn that women are nurturing and expressive while men are strong and independent. Women are seen as the primary caregiver of their children, whether they are work or not. Studies have shown that the wives who earn 100% of their family’s income spend more time with their children than the husbands who earn 100% of the income (Raley, Bianchi, and Wang 2012:1448). Looking at gender and sex at a sociological imagination standpoint, it would be clear that the way society influenced this data. Starting from hundreds and thousands ago gender inequality exists. Some would point out that there is not any gender inequality around us, but there are. For this paper, I am going to write about gender inequality. First, I would attach an argument from articles. However, I would object the articles and provide an explanation for my objection. Then, I would consider a response of my objection and reject the objection.
Social opinion, nationalized expectations, rational calculation and inequality of resources used in countries all present an increase in the overall responsibility for women (Weisbrot 31). This label given to women has been true for a long time in years of the past. “ as women entered the workforce in large numbers since the late sixties, occupations have become segregated based on the amount of felinity or masculinity in each occupation – jobs that have become more integrated for women include mail carriers, bartenders, bus drivers, and real estate agents” ( Weisbrot 43 ). This stereotype has been true but now, it tis the twenty first century. Omen have entered the workforce heavily starting in the late sixties, about 50 years, yet 21 percent of men still believe that it is a womens job to stay home and do the duties that they have done in the years past. It this fine to continue the aged stereotype and keep your wife at home if that works out in a family, but men who say this to keep up their status and not have women overtake them in their field of work are absolute cowards. In the workplace, women do not receive the same benefits that men do. Some women do the same job, for the same amount of hours, and still do not receive the same pay for their work. Is there a specific reason behind this? No, it is just one of the many inequalities that goes on on the job. As pointed out in the essay by Susan Faludi, Blame it on Feminism, women earn less. The average women’s paycheck is twenty percent less than their male counterparts. Men with only high school education’s make more than some women who have graduated college. Most women are still working the traditional “female” jobs: secretaries, teachers, and nurses for example. Construction work, engineering, and doctor’s, are considered “out of our reach” and men’s jobs. Women are very capable of doing these jobs, but most times when applying for a “man’s job” are not taken seriously. American women are more likely not to receive health insurance and twice as likely not to draw pension then American men. They face the biggest gender-biased pay gap in the world.
In American society, the woman has always been viewed in the traditional viewpoint of what role she should play in the home; that she is the homemaker or caretaker. Even when women break from the stereotypical role of "housewife" and join the workforce, they still are not given an equal opportunity at acquiring a job that is seen to be as advancing or of higher recognition, as they would like to have. Men usually already take those positions.
It is, therefore, natural for most companies to think that women cannot be as capable as men in terms of assuming strenuous or challenging positions because women, by default, become less participatory and more vulnerable when they start to have family and children. Apparently, this situation has led to various gender discriminations in the labor market. In conclusion, although the roles of men and women have radically changed over the turn of the century, it is still inevitable to have various gender-related occupational differences because the social and biological roles of women and men do not really change. Society still perceives women as the home makers and men as the earners, and this perception alone defines the differing roles of men and women in the labor market.
Gender roles are extremely important to the functioning of families. The family is one of the most important institutions. It can be nurturing, empowering, and strong. Some families are still very traditional. The woman or mother of the family stays at home to take care of the children and household duties. The man or father figure goes to work so that he can provide for his family. Many people believe that this is the way that things should be. Gender determines the expectations for the family. Different sociologists have given different definitions for gender. However, in its simplest term, gender refers to the socially expected roles and relation between men and women. For example, boys are expected to be the strong ones, aggressive and competitive and girls are to be sweet, caring, and gentle and handled with care. These characteristics, amongst others, are what the society actually expects from individuals based on their sex, but it does not mean that it is imperative for a girl to be feminine or a boy to be masculine which implies that gender is independent of sex. Robert Stoller, an American psychoanalyst, is the first person to have made this observation. While gender is closely linked to sex, they do not have the same meaning. Stoller differentiated between sex and gender by stating that the physical characteristics of a being makes him either a male or a female contrary to gender which makes an individual either masculine or feminine. In other words, it means that sex is what we are born with; either a male or a female and is difficult to change, whereas gender is the character given to us by the society.
