The essay’s author, Amy Tan, who came from China and was raised by a Chinese mother, started to write her essay by introducing herself as a writer who loves language and uses it everyday life. Amy Tan emphasizes the power of language and explains how the language that she has talked with her mother was important and influential in her life. Language is one of the preferred methods of communication. It is essential and powerful when people express their ideas or thoughts and communicate with others in all kinds of situations. In Amy Tan’s essay, she delineated language as follows, “That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world” (Mother Tongue para.6). Language has been an important source of communication. However, the simplicity of writing is not always a characteristic for good writing. When people talk or write about more complex issues such as science or the environment, simple writing can be less meaning or context. The other reason simplicity may not be exemplary is because it can make people or readers confused with between simplicity and clarity whose meaning is different. When communicating and writing, not simplicity demands the high level of knowledge or technical terms to understand, but clarity does. Clarity is more important role in effective conversation and good writing because it is composed of well-organized and focuses on a particular point at a time.
