Against Group Work

While in middle school, teachers always figured that group work was a good way to relax after spending so much time on worksheets, although not everyone thought this way. I am against group work because i feel it is an insufficient way to work and is often very stressful. I feel this way because everyone gets the same grade regardless of the work they put into the project, also finding the time to “get together” with your group is difficult, and you may get paired with people you do not get along with. Group work has many negative effects. One negative effect on group projects is that every member gets the same grade, regardless of the amount of work they put in. If the group members have different schedules this a big limiting factor for the project in general. If one member has sports practice, and another member has practice right after that, there is not really any available time when they can meet up to work. If they have parents that work, they will not have time to take them anywhere, and they cannot drive themselves. Therefore, the group members will not be able to all meet up and complete the project. There is also the problem of living in different locations. Even if you go to the same school as your partners, you could live on different sides of the district. Therefore, creating the problem of not having anywhere to meet up that is convenient for all the members of the group. If the students have personality differences, they typically do not get along. This also leads to disagreement among members. Each person has their own way of thinking, and if they do not compromise on something, the work will never get done. Although people may say that group work is a positive thing because it teaches kids teamwork and how to deal with difficult people, but this is not always the case. There will always be someone who micromanages everything and has to have their own way or no way at all. This makes it near impossible to complete any of the work assigned to students. Also, there is always the possibility of a lazy partner, leading to one person doing twice the amount of work so that they can earn a decent grade. If there is no work done together, it is not teamwork. There are many negative effects of group work including the fact that everyone in the group get the same grade regardless of the work put in, there is the obstacle of finding a time and place to meet, and if you get members that you do not get along with, good work will be hard to complete. You should voice your opinions to your teacher about how you feel about group work so they can try and compromise to make it enjoyable for everyone in the class.
