There are many skills and competencies that an RN must possess in both community and acute care settings. A nurse in a community setting must be self-directed, flexible, adaptable, and accepting of various lifestyles and living conditions (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. 15). I think that a nursing working in an acute care setting should have these same set of skills. Being self-directed will allow the nurse focus on set tasks such as proper care needed for an individual patient. In a doctor’s office an RN will work with doctors and other nurses to provide holistic care for patients (“Explore…”). In hospitals there are many different positions an RN could hold. A medical-surgical RN would take care of patients post-surgery, while a NICU RN would help newborn babies and their parent(s) maintain a good healthy life. With the development of rapids response teams (RRTs), acute care nurses and ancillary departments have a resource available to their disposal when need in uncertain situations. Many times nurses struggle to maintain a patient deteriorating in front of them all the while make a multitude of calls to the physician for orders or concerns. Having a set of “expert” eyes assisting you in these times helps alleviate stress and encourages collaboration amongst staff. (Parker, 2014)
Registered nurses perform different jobs throughout their career. RNs prepare for many different things during the day for example caring and teaching patients about what’s wrong with them. RNs require clinical skills, bedsides manners, and are able to multi-task. They also have to be very clean and safe at all times within their environment. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. I have been a registered nurse for the past six years. I started my nursing career in a long-term care facility where I worked for a year and half . I always wanted to challenge myself so l left long-term care and went to work in the intensive care unit for four years where I saw how people with diabetes are suffering when the disease in not managed well. In an acute setting nurse’s do not have as much time to educate patients. With home health nursing education is what you are primarily doing. A lot of the time with home health nursing consists of talking to your patients, figuring out what’s going on and educating them about how to improve in specific areas. Another difference would be that there is more one on one time with patients in the home health setting. Throughout the day my nurse and I got to spend a great amount of time with just one patient. Our main concern at that time was that one patient, instead of having a group of them that all need cared for. Another difference would include just observing the patient at home.
