What are the essential aspects of a self-directed, intrinsically motivated, active learner? Well first we have to identify the parts. A self-directed learner takes initiative, is persistent, accepts responsibility for their actions and choices, and is capable of self-discipline (Cobb, n.d.). A person who is intrinsically motivated is motivated because they enjoy the task. An active learning is a process, in which a learner is actively engaged through methods such as participating in discussions (businessdictionary.com, 2016).

So a learner who is actively engaged in their learning environment, enjoys learning, is persistent, responsible, and self-disciplined have the parts to be a self-directed, intrinsically motivated active learner. …show more content…

I tend to take the initiative often and am always on the lookout for opportunities to improve myself or products and processes. I try to be proactive rather than reactive because it typically yields better results. I honestly believe that a person must own the actions and choices they make and accept the outcomes associated with it. I strive to stay engaged with my learning because I find it interesting and know that if I am no longer engaged then I will stop learning.

Weaknesses I have regarding self-motivation and being engaged is that I tend to have a cynical and/or downright defeatist attitude at times which makes motivation difficult. I will struggle with staying engaged because of a common issue among many people, time. I work a full time job typically (48-72 hours a week), have a wife and a 3 year old at home, and have numerous household projects and chores that call my attention every day. This lack of time makes me vulnerable to procrastination when it comes to school related tasks.
