1. Explain what the phrase “taking ownership of your learning” means to you.
It means assuming responsibility for your learning i.e. you don’t learn because you are compelled to do it, but because you want to achieve something for yourself. You take ownership of your learning by taking the necessary steps to ensure that you meet your learning goals. These goals can include effective time management, taking the initiative in your studies, being more self-disciplined and appreciating that your learning is a process that you must enjoy and take pride in yourself.

I would say that I am a self-motivated learner. I enjoy learning that is one of the reasons why I enjoy my work and career so much because I learn something new every day. Grades and praise are important, but they do not drive me in my learning. I am more compelled to my own personal achievement i.e. by understanding for myself what I am learning.
· Do you push yourself to think deeper about issues and draw connections to your personal, academic, and professional lives?
Yes, I think I do compel myself to think deeper about issues, more so now that I am studying at the University of the People. I find myself drawing connections to my personal and professional life when participating in discussion forums. In one of my recent papers, I had to draw on my current career to research the topic and answer the question.

However, the teacher is the expert, and as the novice, I do respect the direction in which they are focusing my learning. The instructor is the purveyor of the ideas, and I am the person who researches those ideas and gives credence to them in my studies.

Yes, I see value in collaborative learning and peer engagement and feedback, because when you research a topic in isolation, you are not always aware of the counter arguments and opinions surrounding the topic. By engaging with your peers, you gain a greater awareness of the topic and also the differing arguments surrounding the topic. There is a difference in how deeply I explore a topic when I am alone I tend to research a topic too deeply, whereas in a group your inclinations are tempered by the inclinations of the group.
