What does it take to be a writer?
Being a writer is so much more than just storytelling, especially when it comes to writing for theatre. One has to have a fantastic imagination to write something that will captivate the audience and keep their attention during the whole story. A writer for theatre should also have knowledge of acting because to effectively communicate their story, they should know everything there is to know about their characters. As it was discussed in class, schools such as UCR requires almost everyone in the TFDP department to take some type of acting classes for the purpose of being experienced in every aspect of theatre. Actors have to have thick skin and an incredible amount a patience. People constantly criticize and correct actors, mostly to make sure that they bring the part to life in the way the director or writer sees fit. Actors must also have a certain curiosity and ask questions about their character to truly bring that character to life. An actor must be fearless or be really good at hiding their fear. Actors have to be on stage or in front of a camera and be able to perform without freaking out and affecting their character or forgetting their lines. Having a diverse personality is also important for an actor. Actors are required to play a plethora of characters, and to master each of those characters, the actor must be able to embody the required personality.
For me, I find it challenging to speak in front of people. I have definitely come a long way in my public speaking skills over the past few years, but I still face many challenges. I have a diverse personality and have never been accused of being monotone while off stage, but when it comes to being on stage, the fear causes me to freeze up and become dry and monotone. I was very pleased to hear UCR offers such a great public speaking course and I will definitely be signing up for that class to improve my …show more content…

Being a researcher takes so much time and patience with and requires great attention to detail. When researching for a script or documentary, it is the small details that have the biggest impact. Small details can have drastic effects on a character and how they are performed and received by an audience. In order to be a researcher, you have to be passionate about it, it’s tedious and usually thankless work, but the end result is dramatically affected by the work of the researcher.
Personally, I am not a very patient person, so I feel like I would not be the best person to research information for a character or setting. I will say though, certain topics such as factory farming and food production carry a particular interest for me which I have devoted much of my time to researching. To be honest, if I were researching a part for a Shakespearean play, I would have little passion and probably not do the best work possible, so I feel like that is where the need for passion for the research comes
