My Explorer is Abel Tasman, and did you know that he was the one that discovered the Fiji islands! Or did you know that he was one of the people that tried to help the Philippines during their time of war with the Spanish. Abel Tasman was born on 1602 or 1603 in Lutjegast, Groningen, The Netherlands. He had 2 wives, the first wife named is Claesgie Hex and they also had a daughter named Claesjen, but unfortunately Claesgie died, so Tasman decided to have another wife, her name is Jannetje (Joanna) Thaerts. Tasman was not just an explorer and a navigator, but he was also a Dutch seafarer and merchant. He wanted to explore, because he was in service to the Dutch East India Company. Tasman traveled to Asia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji
At the age of thirteen he boarded a ship to Whitehaven, which was a large port across the Solway Firth. There he signed up for a seven year seaman's apprenticeship on The Friendship of Whitehaven, whose captain was James Younger, a prosperous merchant and ship owner. His first voyage took him across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados and Fredericksburg, Virginia at which he stayed with his older brother William, a tailor, who had left Scotland for America over thirteen years before, and who now was living comfortably and flourishing.
When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.
the West Indies, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Portugal, Italy, Central America, Georgia, Virginia, Philadelphia and New England. It seemed that he traveled everywhere except to where he really wanted to go, which was Africa. It was during these years that he learned the English language and values from a seaman by the name of Richard Baker.
In times of the golden age the VOC (United East Indian Company) the Dutch were well known by their trade. They had ships and trading posts all over Asia and Africa. Still they were looking for shortcuts to sail much faster to their home harbours. The shorter they have to sail with their load the more profit they could make. To find new and faster ways to sail to the east would be great so they started to explore the see’s to find these shortcuts and make new routes to sail for trade.
He came in knowing that, despite the risks of such long travel, the things that he would see would be unlike anything that he had ever seen before. Perhaps, this was Polo’s motivation. It is never explicitly stated, but it may be that Polo was driven by curiosity. He merely wanted to learn more about the great culture he had heard about.... ...
William Clark was ½ of the genius team that made their way through miles of unknown land, unknown nature, unknown natives, and came home with all but one voyager, who was killed of natural causes. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis were the first Americans to try and map the Louisiana Purchase area, and not only did they map it, they discovered allies, new plants and animals, and discovered new land and water routes that could be useful for future travelers.
In 1606 Smith wanted to join the colonization of Virginia. The expedition had 3 ships with 104 navigators (the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery.)
Christopher Columbus had two main motives for trying to find a sea route around the world to Asia. Columbus’ first reason was that he wanted the fame. He believed that the earth was round and according to his theory, the earth was only 18,000 miles in circumference (Symcox, 9). He believed that it would be faster to sail around the world to Asia than sailing around Africa. He wanted to be the first person credited for sailing around the earth to Asia. Columbus also wanted to make a name for his family. The second reason Columbus wanted to sail around the world was simple. He wanted to make money. Columbus’ want for fame and fortune drove him to create a sea route to Asia.

I have served with Scott, Shackleton, and Mawson, and have met Nansen, Amundsen, Peary, Cook, and other explorers, and in my considered opinion, for all the best points of leadership, coolness in the face of danger, resource under difficulties, quickness in decisions, never-failing optimism, and the faculty of instilling the same into others, remarkable genius for organization, consideration for those under him, and obliteration of self, the palm must be given to Shackleton, a hero and a gentleman in very truth.
Zheng He is one of the biggest explorer of the world but unfortunately he is to one of the lesser known.
He sailed and navigated other great explorers like Lewis and Clark and Henry Hudson, but in 1492 he was called upon for a solo expedition by the King of France. Jacques Cartier’s goals was to find a Northwest Passage to India, find the lands with spices, and find new places to trade. Cartier had a series of three voyages in his expedition which is what he is famously known for. Cartier started to sail in 1534, arriving 20 days later to explore the west coast of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, discovering some new lands. Cartier return back home to tell the king about his expedition, he also brought back Native American Captives.
