When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Then to do the same thing over again. Abbott would play high school baseball for the Flint Central High School in Michigan. After he graduated from high school he drafting in the thirty-six round of the 1985 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Abbott decided not sign with the Toronto Blue Jays and he went on to play for the Wolverines for three season. During his three years at the University of Michigan, Abbott helped lead the Wolverines Two Big Ten Championship. Abbott also became the first baseball player ever to win the James E. Sullivan Award and the Jesse Owens Award as the Big Ten Athlete of the Year. Abbott was also a member of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team and were he helped team the United States take home the gold medal. Jim Abbott was drafted in the first round with the eighth overall pick by the California Angels. He would play four season their before being traded to the New York Yankees. In his two years in New York, Abbott would join the elite club of throwing a no-hitter.
